Need Help Building a Server for Minecraft

Thread Starter
I am trying to build a Ubuntu server that will run a 50-100 player Minecraft server with no lag and 95-100% uptime, as well as up to 50 plugins. I don't know a lot about system requirements for servers, whether it would be better to get and Ivy Bridge i3 or a cheap Xeon. I want it to also be able to run modded servers, such as Aether, Tekkit/Lite, Voltz, etc. This computer should be relatively future proof, I don't want to drop $100 every year to make the processor something that can keep up.

Note: List is created with budget in mind. Do not need a monitor, mouse, keyboard, os, or graphics card, (as I have heard they do not improve server performance.)

Other Considerations: Is running a ramdisk a good idea? How much ram would I need to run a world steadily for years to come?

Parts List:

CPU: Intel i3-3225 (Or higher. What is the best current i3? Also considering Xeon E3-1220)

Motherboard: ASRock B75M-DGS (Cheap server motherboard if going with Xeon? Intel motherboard is maybe cheaper?)

Case: Antec Minuet 350w PSU included

HDD: Caviar Blue 7200 250GB

SSD: Crucial V4 32GB

Cooler: Stock

Memory: Corsair 16GB 1600mHz DDR3

A xeon would be better. If you want a 50-100 player server with that many plugins, you would need more then 16GB of ram. I would recommend 32-64GB considering you want to use a ramdisk. Just get an intel motherboard, you don't need all the bells and whistles of a normal board. Do you have a decent internet connection to run this server? Otherwise I would just recommend you get a 3rd party hosted server.

My connection is decent. I get 50 download, 35 upload according to speedtest.net. Can you recommend a cheap Xeon and motherboard to go with it? And how do I get that much RAM cheap? Does it have to be ECC? I was asking whether a ramdisk is worth it. The V4 is pretty fast too.

Ramdisk is definitely worth it. Getting that much ram cheap, I would have no idea. No idea on the ECC too.

Intel DX79TO Motherboard
^You can have a look at those.

The Xeon is an X79 compatible processor? And I want to go as minimal on the board as possible, but that's not even a server board.

There's no reason to get the xeon imo. It's a higher binned CPU (supposedly) but you're paying out the rear for it.

What about the ECC RAM and whether or not the i3 I chose is good enough?

Stick with an i3. The additional cores won't make a difference to mine craft performance unless somehow mine craft becomes multithreaded.

Get a high iops ssd as well. Will help with loading and saving.
