Buyer's remorse : GTX 660 Ti

Thread Starter
Hello everyone how is it going.
I've been wondering if I made a mistake going with a GTX 660 Ti GC 2 GB, when I had the option to fork out more 40$ to get the Sapphire HD Radeon 7950 OC.
Playing Medal of honor warfighter was pretty smooth except in the part when I had to go in the ship to disable it, near the end of the game. The FPS was dropping to the 40's. Crysis in the last 2 battles with the gigantic aliens was dropping into low 20's and I think even below 20 @ 4x MSAA, everything very high except shadow and water on high.
I game on a Samsung SyncMaster TA350 1080p 23'' monitor.
Is this actually due to the low memory banwith of the 660 Ti? Would I have seen better results with the 7950? I was about to pull the trigger on the 7950 until I read about microstuttering, which prevented me from buying that card :S.
All in all, would I have been much more satisfied if I went with the 7950?
Thanks in advance.

GTX660 ti will be fine, was just about to get one actually but ended up getting sli gtx570's for cheaper. As far as i can tell sli gtx660 ti's look about the best price/performance out of the whole line up.

7950 is the better card it has 3GB of Vmem with 384bit overclocks like crazy, about the microstuttering its almost gone with the new drivers 13.2 b5. Since we are on OCN stock its not valid for me so 7950 Oced beats 660ti oced any day

by the way theres a known issue with way over done tessellation in crysis2 causes low fps, turn your objects setting down to medium or low and see if you get an fps increase

Would the 7950 have been a better choice? Probably. Is the 660ti bad? Not at all. To keep the frames up in games, I suggest turning down the msaa. On a 1080p screen, there really isn't need for more than 2x. I don't think it looks much better with more. I don't think one 1080 screen needs more than 2 gigs of card memory (until you start adding mods and what not). And <-- that is my 2 cents. thumb.gif

Also see what you can do overclocking it, might help get those frames up.

Also what do you have for a processor?

Would the HD 7950 oc have been faster . definitely. anybody who has seen comparisons of HD 7950 and HD 7970 at same clocks knows the HD 7970 is on avg 5% faster. there are HD 7950 boost cards with 925 mhz boost selling for similar price as GTX 660 Ti. these cards are on par with GTX 670 at stock speeds and scale extremely well with overclocking.

http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/HIS/HD_7950_X2_Boost/31.html

the microstuttering issue does not affect the majority of games. Those that were affected have been partially addressed by AMD with 13.2 beta drivers for games like skyrim, guild wars 2, borderlands 2. the next driver update with a new memory manager will improve frame latency for all DX11 and DX10 games which have been affected. eg: like Hitman Absolution

also with high levels of MSAA or SSAA the GTX 660 Ti performance is affected badly with min fps getting hit severely. this is mainly due to ROP and bandwidth cuts. the HD 7950 retains the same ROP and memory bus width of HD 7950 while GTX 660 Ti cuts 25% of ROP and bandwidth compared to GTX 670 / GTX 680.

so if there is an option to return the GTX 660 Ti and get the HD 7950 boost go for it. sapphire HD 7950 boost is a good option.

About the CPU, I'm using a 3570k @ stock on a Z77-D3H ( which also I have a buyer's remorse for, because I didn't pay a little more and take the z77x-ud3h, which would have allowed me to SLI or crossfire more effectively in the future ).
Yea, sadly no option to return the 660 Ti now, but I guess I'll try to do so memory overclocking to see if that helps.
Thanks for all the replies biggrin.gif.

You sure about that? I thought this CPU was enough @ stock.
Anyways I'm broke right now and can't afford an aftermarket cooler, the stock cooler is ridiculous and barely enough for stock clocks, when I have the cash I'll think about this.
Since this brings the topic up, Cooler master Hyper EVO 212+, good enough? It may not be the best one out there but I don't want to fork out a lot for a cooler.
