Weird Motherboard Issue After Updating BIOS

Thread Starter
Hey everyone,

I just got done building my new system. It has an ASUS SABERTOOTH X79 Motherboard, intel i7-3820 CPU, 16GB Corsair Vengence RAM, ASUS GTX 570 Graphics Card, intel ethernet card, creative extremegamer, and a 2TB WD Black Caviar, 240GB Corsair N-Force SSD, and a 60GB Crucial M4 SSD.

I built the system and everything was running beautifully. Then before finishing up the build I wanted to update the BIOS to the mobo, as personally I have never had a severe problem doing so. After updating BIOS the computer still turns on and starts to load windows, but then just crashes. I tried windows repair same thing, I've tried using Hirens bootCD and off a USB, and the exact same thing (windows starts to load then crashes). I've even taken all of the hard drives out that had any data on them, cleared them, put them back in, and the same thing. I try and run windows 7 install and windows installer never comes up, instead it also tries to load windows and just fails. After clearing the N-Force that use to have win7 on it I tried installing Ubunto linux onto it from another computer, and I still have the exact same issue. Only time it wont try to load windows if if there are no drives attached at all. So wheter I am booting from a CD, clean HDD's, or linux, all it does it try to load windows 7 then crash.

I have taken the battery out and cleared CMOS. I have even taken every ram chip out and touched each metal connector with a paper clip to discharge them. I have tried to reflash the BIOS back to the orginal version, but ASUS did a .ROM to .CAP BIOS conversion and I can no longer go back to the original .ROM BIOS version. When I try flashing back to an earlier version it tells me it is an outdated version. I will be calling up ASUS tomorrow, but in the mean time I was curious if anyone has every encountered a problem like this.

Thanks for the help,
Zek

Why dont you try to downgrade your bios to previous version that worked ?

there is something called USB biod flashback, i am not sure if it is too late to use it but i think you can flash bios from the UI on startup from USB.

There is a dos Utility from which you can flash your motherboard BIOS just make bootable dos usb flash drive and run the utility and select the bios file.

Hi xplode,
I have tried to USB flash back the BIOS, and it wont reflash the BIOS. I tried flashing the bios back from within the BIOS, and it told me outdated BIOS. Hirens wont even boot on me, nor will my linux distro's so I do not know how I am supposed to boot into DOS to flash the bios.

I will at least give it a try though, thanks

Sounds like you're not booting drives correctly (HDD or DVD drive). Have you tried setting the boot device priority in the BIOS when trying to boot windows setup disc and pressing the "any" key lol when prompted... or alternatively use the post shortcut key for boot options (possibly F8 key with ASUS boards... not sure) select your DVD drive and then see if setup starts.

If you can't get windows setup to start then something must have been reset in the bios when you updated causing these problems. Also windows must also still be installed on one of your drives for it to begin startup so your clearing of drives must not have worked.

This is what makes this problem so frustrating. I have cleared all the drives, and EVEN INSTALLED UBUNTO onto the drive that use to have windows, YET it is still trying to load windows. I have never encountered anything like this before in my life (been building computers since I was 14).

sigh and yes i have set boot priorities and pressed the any key when asked

Try each drive seperatley to find out which one is the one with windows on then disconnect it and use another empty drive on its own and try to install windows or ubuntu and see if it will load correctly.

Certainly is a weird one... good luck.

I have done that. And it always tries to boot windows. even when I have it only boot off of HirensUSB it tries to boot windows then crashes and now blue screen (blue screen at windows load is new). This is definitly the weirdest thing I have encountered in a very long time... I seem to attract oddities tongue.gif

Only thing I can think of that causes bsod at windows boot after bios settings change is switching from IDE mode to AHCI or vice versa.

Somehow from what you are describing... I don't think it will be that.

This is exactly what I was thinking. The system will boot, and start to load the OS. But within a few seconds the system will BSOD and restart. I also recommend checking the SATA setting.

I tried switching from AHCI to IDE mode and my system still crashes after somehow magically trying to load windows (as no drives in the comp have windows anymore). worth a try
