3D On AMD Cards. Got a few questions

Thread Starter
Hey guys, so i am looking to get into 3d, and have a few questions.

1: Is AMD 3d good, or is nvidea the way to go, and amd is ok but not as good as nvidea,
2: I know 3d requires 120hz screen, so, if i buy a 120hz screen, can that screen be used with nvidea and/or amd, or is the screen set for one or the other brands?
3: Is there any amd 3d screens avalible, all the ones on amd website are disconntiued, and I dont see a way to get glasses separate, where Nvidea, I can buy the screen, with glasses, or w/o and get the glasses $120.

Let me know,
Thanks

When I used 3d with my samsung 3d tv, it worked flawlessly. When i used Nvidia, it didn't seem to work so well. If you get a 120hz screen that is not 3d enabled, you can buy the nvidia glasses and it will go 3d at 60hz.

ok well actually it all depends on your set up are u using a 3d monitor or a 3d tv? then are u using active or passive 3d?

nividia is OVERALL better for 3d because the application software works at mor then 25fps

amd 3d only supports at full hd up to 25 fps wich SUCKS!!!! but amd is also drasticly cheaper because it uses passive 3d (two images overlaced each other reducing resolution on tv by half to produce a 3d effect)

NVidia 3d supports active shutter 3d wich is expensive but DRASTICLY BETTER and supports all fps NVidia also has there own 3d software that works on EVERYTHING amd uses a program I think called true3d or something like that that runs like a parapalegic down hill. it constantly crashes and supports very few programs

I love amd so this hurts to say this but from my experience USE NVIDIA NO CONTEST!

I'm going to chime in here because this is an area I do know pretty well. In short Nvidia does 3D gaming better than AMD. I did a lot of homework before my switch for a 3D Vision system.

This reviews an Nvidia compatible monitor compared to an AMD HD3D last year Feb 10, 2012. Almost every 3D game had issues of some kind with AMD. Difference is that Nvidia renders the 3D on a hardware level which they provide support in drivers updates constantly adding, improving and adjusting. AMD relies it to be done by a third party software company to accomplish it and loses quality control. Nothing has changed in this area since this review.

NVIDIA 3D Vision 2 featuring the ASUS VG278H Screen
Quote:
The HD3D hardware, other than the graphics cards, is very much a mix of quality (with some screens and glasses being truly awful) and the drivers, developed by independent developers, do not offer the same level of quality as AMD's own or NVIDIA's. Then when we do play the experience rarely is without issue and often very much frustrates.

NVIDIA will continue to dominate in this area... and dominate they do. At every step of the 3D Vision 2 experience it is clear the user and ease of use is a key priority. That begins with a wizard which helps us set the technology up and continues in-game where we get any appropriate hints to help us maximise the quality of 3D.

I looked into an AMD supported monitor which I think is the best in this arena, the Samsung SA950 27" monitor review. It's a great 120Hz 2D gaming monitor regardless of which GPU your using. This monitor uses Tri-Def software to render 3D for gaming.

As for the movies in HD3D, there isn't as much depth as Nvidia 3D Vision. Nvidia 3D Vision 2 light boost improved viewing on these monitors now to even a higher detail. As for watching movies it's fine in HD3D just not as much 'pop' like Nvidia 3D Vision IMO. The Samsung SA950 monitor itself can take 2D movies and converts it into 3D movies without Tri-Def software.

Samsung SA950 27in 3D monitor review

This is a shame because Samsung's chosen methods of displaying 3D - TriDef software and monitor-side processing - aren't as immerse in the games we tested with.

AMD has a lot going for it like pricing, performance, and supporting multiple monitors but not 3D Vision.

Having said all that since you already have an AMD card and looking for a monitor I'd suggest you looking for an AMD HD3D supported monitor like the Samsung SA950 anyway as you'll be able to get a taste of 3D, unless 3D Vision is going to be the main focus of your system. Hope this helped explain the differences question you asked.

Guys also, will a gtx 680 max out a 144hz 1080p screen, such as this one, on 3d? Or would I need 2 680s or hopefully one 780?

NO. You'll need two cards overclocked to maintain 120fps minimums on average.

Btw, spending the money to go 3D is a terribad way to blow cash. You'll use the 3D for a few days, then realize even when its good it still sucks. And then you won't really use it again. On driving games it's cool but it makes your eyes tired, cuz you know they have to work twice as hard. Which brings me back to the first point, you'll use it for a lil while then tire of it.
