7950 or 7970

is it worth what i save? which are the best models

i dont really plan to OC but i might, i want a sturdy card and i notice the Radeons seem to outperform the GTX's in more areas so I am avoiding Nvidia

Hello!
I am very happy with my MSI TFIII OC and also with my Sapphire 7950 OC w/dual x crossfire setup.
Both game @ 1100/1400 1.18V,+20 Power,comfortably(28c ambient-TFII idles 30c,games 65-68 w/50% fan,VRM@ 64)on 1080p 75hz...TFII is a little noisier.
Sapphires(w/MCW-82-7900 GPU blocks,HS 7950's & 80 mm fans for VRM)idle at 27c & game at 44c.,VRM 56c
I tested MSI TFIII on H20,(has 7970 pcb,htf w/8pin/6pin)idle 27c gamed @ 49c.VRM 70c.
ASIC 89%
I tested Sapphire's w/dual-x (air)same settings,idles 30c,games 63-65 w/50% fan,VRM 67c.
ASIC 64 & 67
Both have overall good reviews-
Both needed oe cooler removed to replace TIM (GOBS in all 3 cases)
TFIII had one thermal pad with blue film still attached, both types leave 2 memory chips exposed...(under heatpipes?)
Some x-fire issues(make sure bios switches same,#2 on all, extra volts!)
may need memory volts, otherwise great cards.

I would recommend either.
YMMV!

OH MAN, while i appreciate your post so much you went into so much depth that i dont know how to cipher this lol

i def am going for 7950 now seeing as its a <300> vs >450 pricemark

did you mean you replaced the thermal paste on all heatsinks for the card? (ive never replaced a gpu's heatsink or cooler is a bit scarry) for me tongue.gif

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jExfK6_zZRU good video for me smile.gif

now how to figure which would be the best 7950 for performance with no oc, seeing as if i oc ill lure myself into upgrading reservoir pump and get a gpu waterblock

OC Edition means it comes overclocked from the factory, so you'll get a card that comes with a core clock of 900mhz, usually this card can be overclocked even further without much effort thumb.gif. The other Sapphire card is stock at 800mhz, you can still overclock it though, but there's no guarantee that you'll get anywhere near 900mhz, i'll say go with the OC Edition.

I have the Gigabyte Windforce 7950 and love it! It is great, very quiet and overclocks like a champ. Highly recommended:thumb:

magic question....

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3242918&CatId=7387

do i buy a 7950 MSI twin frozr OC and push it a bit

or do i just spend 40$ more and get a crappy 7970 frown.gif

sine its an investment, i do want to make the right one, i obviousyl dont want the 9950 to come out in 3months be 5 times as good as my card for only 500$

Edit WOW... so 30$ for a 50mhz increase from the OC MSI TFIII ... is it really worth it ? :/ seems like im getting taxed for nothing

overclocked means they come overclocked from the factory. its guaranteed to work at those speeds. you can overclock further . so there is no cheating. also tigerdirect pricing is not as good. go for sapphire HD 7950 boost. good cooler. unlocked voltage. get it from superbiiz. the card is 29cm long. make sure your case can fit the card.

fill in your config
