XoticPC.com, Sager NP9170, playing games and system just shuts off!

I bought this from XoticPC.com , Sager NP9170 - Display 17.3" FHD 16:9 Super Clear Ultra Bright LED Anti-Glare Screen (1920x1080)- 3rd Generation Intel Ivy Bridge Core i7 3630QM (2.4GHz - 3.4GHz, 6MB Intel Smart Cache) - Graphics Video Card nVidia GeForce GTX 675MX 4,096MB GDDR5 DX11.1 - Ram 8GB DDR3 1600Mhz- Sager Branding - 750GB 7200RPM [Serial-ATA II 300 - 16MB Cache] - Dual Layer SuperMulti DVDRW/CDRW Drive w/ Software, Memory Card Reader Internal 9 in 1 - Intel® Advanced-N 6235 WiFi module.

Those are my computer specs, I just ordered this machine about a two weeks ago, I have had in my posession for about 6 days now and when I play any game or open up to many windows on my PC, it just turns off. No BSOD, no beeps or errors. It just shuts down. Now on the NP9170 you can hit the FN key then hit 1 and it turns the fans on in turbo mode. If I do that then I have zero issues. But I don't think I should have to do that.

So here is my question. What do you all think I should do about this? Return the computer, or just deal with the issue and FN+1 every time I want to do anything? Roland from XoticPC.com has been super helpful, unlike the guys from Sager. Sager says that it is supposed to do that, which I know it isn't. I haven't ever had a computer do that. I heard of old broke down XBOX 360's doing it, but this ain't no XBOX 360 it is a $1,500 high end gaming laptop. Let me know what y'all think

If it just shuts off randomly and hitting FN+1(to run the fans at max speed) makes everything alright then I'd say you've got an overheating laptop. Check your temps. A common safety mechanism for computers is that when the CPU or GPU hit a certain temperature i.e. 105/100 degrees celcius then the computer shuts itself off to prevent further damage.

EDIT: Believe it or not it's pretty common for XoticPC and other Clevo resellers to have really poor standards when installing and configuring laptops. The common fix is to properly apply good thermal paste on both your GPU and CPU and then use Aluminium tape to make sure that there isn't a loss of airflow.

Notice in this pic below there is a gap between the heatsink and fan?

In this there isn't

No, It's not supposed to do that. Are you absolutely sure that it never crashes when FN+1 is used to speed up your fans. Is it only in games or anything you do? Is the fan spinning at all when the turbo fan mode isn't on?

If you do have an overheating problem, try replacing the thermal paste with a high quality one. Sager is one of the rare manufacturers that will allow thermal paste replacement without voiding the warranty.

Yes I am positive it only crashes when the fans are not in turbo mode (FN+1). The fans do spin when turbo is off, but I guess they just don't spin fast enough.

I have repasted the GPU and the CPU. I used Arctic Silver 5 and it did lower my temps a few degrees C. But unfortunately, my computer still shuts down when playing a game. It stops unexpectedly too so I never get the chance to see what the core temp is before it shuts down.

Another thing to mention when I took off the heatsink for the CPU I noticed that they had used some kind of foam that set on top of the grey capacitors. The foam is white and it isn't anything like the purple/pink foam that is on the GPU heatsinks. Maybe that just doesn't conduct enough heat? IDK?

One more thing, when my laptop turns off it does it really fast. I mean I will open a game and within 3 - 5 minutes it turns off. Sometimes I don't even make it through the games menu.

Ok I just tried playing a game in windowed mode and it ran perfectly. The exact second I put it into full screen mode it shut down. I was having great temps and everything. Nothing above 70C.

So you think it is a contact issue? do you think I should pull the CPU and reinsert it? Or should I check the GPU? I really don't want to have to wait 2 weeks for a replacement to come in. BTW thanks Bal3Wolf. I was starting to think that is what it could have been.

Edit: But if it was a contact issue why would the games still run fine with the fans on turbo (FN+1)?

So to recap; Laptop runs fine in windowed mode while playing games, as soon as I go full screen if the fans aren't in turbo (FN+1), the laptop shuts down.

EDIT:

Did you set the machine to high power mode? It's gotta be set into high power mode for the machine to take fully advantage of the setup.
