May I get some updated_Straight Info on Uverse & Own Router?

Ill be switching to Uverse in a few days.

Whats settings or How would I setup the the 2Wire (2n1) with a router? Ive read several post, with different answers.

My original plan was to purchase a new router for now, and reuse that router as an AP, once I build myself a a PFsense Box.

Would I still be able to do that with Uverse?

The two router Im looking at:

TP-LINK TL-WDR3600 Dual Band Wireless N600 Router, Gigabit, DD-WRT Open Source support (link)

or

TP-LINK TL-WR1043ND Ultimate Wireless N300 Router, can run DD-WRT (link)

Current setup:

System(shared hdd)_NIC
Nexus7_WiFi
ATT Microcell
Two,Phones_WiFi
DLNA(without UPnP) Streamer with HDMI & NIC 4 TV (Looking, havent purchased yet) Would someone suggest one?

Later I will add:

FreeNAS_Server_NIC
Laptop or SFF System_wifi

Also, can you run a home network without UPnP? And yes, Im a Noob!

Thoughts,
Shane c.

You have to have the 2wire device in the chain. You can sort of put it in bridge mode, but the procedure differs slightly depending on which 2wire device you get. There's at least two different ones that AT&T deploys, plus one that is two pieces (inside and outside) and supports pair bonding. If you don't put it in bridge mode, you can plug in the other router LAN to WAN, but you will be double NATting and that is about as much fun as Polio.

Internet > 2Wire box > Your router > devices

UPnP is not necessary, but it makes things easier.

Thanks for that quick reply!

Once I get the Uverse installed, Ill post on which 2Wire.

Question:

Or would this make a difference?

ANd any work around with the double NAT thing?

Internet > 2Wire box > pfsense > AP and other devices

Double NATting can be avoided if you can disable routing on the 2wire. This is what bridging accomplishes.

You can also let DHCP be handled on the 2Wire and then just run the other Routing devices without DHCP.
