Clicking noises are never good. Best practice would be backup all important data to an external or dvd's, then troubleshoot the problem. The clicking noise may be the drive powering up too after inactivity.

What is better out of

Seagate Barracuda ST2000DM001 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache

or

Western Digital WD20EARX Caviar Green 2TB SATA3

it will get plenty of use so needs to be reliable im thinking the WD will be better?

The ticks you are hearing are the heads docking. This is usually a tall tale sign that the drive is starting to show its age. Once the ticks turn into grinding (continuous long ticks), that's when you should be worried about buying a replacement. Or just pick one up if the noise is driving you insane. As for WD vs Seagate, that's a tough decision as I have owned nothing but Seagate Baracuda's for the past 7 years. I run my machine 24/7 and about 3 years later its time to replace the drive (which is a typical 5 year life span). Also during that time I have never gotten a bad drive, and most of them came off ebay. I have had the machine since 2006 and it's only gone through 2 drives (the 2nd one is dying as we speak "CLICK! grind! SQUAAAKKK!"). Both are good brands, but getting a good drive is really only a pick of the litter.

you need to get one of those hard drive torque screwdrivers. (w/e they are called)

overtime the screws get loose due to vibration from the spinning disk

I would suggest Seagate as I have one and it is faster than WD Caviar Green.

Backup immediately!!! Clicking isn't good at all.
I've had two WD hard drives die on me like that.
The seagate drives I bought as replacement have lasted me for 4 years and still running.

Thanks everyone for the reply's i think I will get the WD green 2tb for backups
