GTX 580 Warped Shroud (Heat Issue)

Thread Starter
Has anyone seen this before on a GTX 580/570?

(Unmutilated by Youtube)

This 'ripple' was not present when I bought it. It should take a hell of a lot of heat to warp the plastic like that, shouldn't it? But my thermals have always been fine. The card has always lived in a FT02 (for anyone who doesn't know what that is). 100% load temp is ~85° (normal 'keep below' temp in the stock fan curve), and there is always tons of fan speed headroom.

I also noticed this:

Sorry for the quality of the photo, but you can see that faint smudge that I've highlighted in the PIP - it looks like discoloration caused by heat to me, that or some oil that's seeped out of a thermal pad/TIM.

Do you think there is any cause for concern? I'm not too happy about the aesthetic impact of the warping...

I don't think there is cause for concern, the part highlighted in the picture looks identical to oil from a thermal pad.

You are fine, there is nothing wrong with your card.

By the way, what camera did you use to shoot that video?

That plastic's melting temp isn't actually to high. Its why they use it, its easy to mold. Im not to surprised with some consistent 85c temps it did that.

A Cannon 'Legria' FS36 which was a giveaway with a laptop IIRC.

My GTX 285 had the same 85° threshold and spent most of it's life in an HTPC case playing Crysis at 100% load, and it's shroud is still as straight as the day I bought it.

Wow, I didn't realize they'd made it so easy to remove the shroud on the 580. I had assumed that it would be another 285 where you have to remove the whole HSF assembly, disturbing all the thermal pads etc., but actually it's dead easy. This is a great move on nvidia's part, and makes it so easy to clean. What a nice design!

...anyway, the underside of the shroud was completely smooth, so it turns out it's only the EVGA decal sticker - or rather the glue that holds it on - that's at fault. The ripples are mainly air bubbles.

EDIT: Will removing the EVGA sticker void my warranty?
