Best fan for the job

Thread Starter
I just ordered a fractal design r4

I want to know what are the best fans for the case?

I currently have a noctua pwm fan on a hyper212 evo as my cpu cooler.

I want to fill the back fan, 2 front fans, and bottom fan.

Anyone have suggestions?

Right now my general thoughts are let the 2 fans that come with it be the front 2 fans, get a new 140mm for the back, and some form of noctua or otherwise fluid-dynamic bearing on the bottom

What fans would be best to get, for bottom, and back?

Does anyone know if the noctua nf-15 will fit? Having a noctua 150mm fan would be kinda cool for the bottom fan (bad pun, I know)

Where are you at on our big blue marble?

Here we can get Thermalright TY-147 fans for £5.87.

I've modded a few TY-140 series fan and a mate just built a new R4 with modded TY-147s in the front. wink.gif

If you get PWM splitter with molex/Sata plug for PSU power you can run them with your cooler fans and have all run same speed.. idle when system / cooler fans idle and rev up when needed. wink.gif

I highly suggest the cougar hydro-dynamic pwm's I have my case filled with them. They move a lot of air(70.5 cfm) and silent at around 17.9db. Plus intake side looks slick (other than the orange rubber mounting points). Orange or black blades. 13.99 on Newegg right now. By far the best fans I have owned. Also they have 140s.

Downsize from 140mm fans to 120mm fans??
Cougar makes both, I have 120s and 140s in my black hawk case. With speed fan keeping only a few running at 50% my computer stays cool while dling torrents or such tasks. Also forgot to point out the crazy mfg suggested life on them. Like I said beat fan I have seen so far. Only thing I don't like is they have orange rubber pads around where the screws go which I think is ugly and stupid since I ordered them with black . Just a minor annoyance which doesn't even bother me enough to get some model paint and make them black smile.gif oh yeah FYI for some reason the 140s are 3 pin only??? No pwm but ship with a low noise adapter as if they aren't quiet enough. I suppose my only caution to you would be to only get as many as you really need because as much air as they move at 100% you end up with a whooshing sound with too many installed (as with any fan) or just get a fan controller I suppose. They seem to have a lot of engineering into them and live up to all my expectations.

Indeed.
I've heard good thing about Cougar.
Too bad they don't have 140mm in PWM.
Yeah but NBD, I have my 140s on pwm headers with pwm120s via a pwm splitter and changing rpms still works like a charm. I see that your probably looking to buy for a media PC, I would go with one, maybe 2 for that rig should plenty of cooling.

I see in your SIG that your GPU died. If your still in need I can definitely donate one

I've ran many different pwm fans on same signal. Only thing is if the rpm range is dramatically different. (like 1300rpm vs 2500rpm) the rpm of 2500 rpm increases faster as PWM signal increases.. Which is to be expected. I'm running TY-140 case fans and TY-143 cooler fans. 650-850rpm are close, than TY-143 rpm starts to pull away. I've used Akasa FN053 (500-1500rpm) and TY-140 (600-1300rpm) and they worked great on same PWM signal.
Fan speeds TY-140 & TY-143 on same PWM signal
TY-140 635 800 860 . 915. 975 1010 1080 1110 1150 1215 1220 1270 1305 1330rpm
TY-143 605 800 950 1110 1260 1400 1550 1700 1850 2000 2150 2300 2400 2500rpm

TY-140 TY-143 FN053

. rpm . . rpm . . rpm
. 651 . . 685 . . 660
. 692 . . 711 . . 771
. 806 . . 792 . . 780
. 900 . . 990 . . 863
. 998 . 1269 . 1004
1100 . 1650 . 1208
1203 . 2000 . 1542
1300 . 2491 . 1744

Thanks for the offer. I'm using a HD6570 at the moment. I've sent you a PM.

I read a few things about the TY140s, hear they're great

I got a little nervious because people kept saying they had to mod them, and quite simply, I hate modding hardware. I want everything to be drop in. I've screwed up too many projects.

I was eyeballing those cougars until I saw that they have issues with horizontal placement, despite having a fluid dynamic bearing.

I ended up splurging a bit as I got obsessive with this last night, since I found a sale on a 2pack for noctua nf-a14 FLX (I hope those are good, they're too new to see solid reviews on, maybe I'll make some! If they suck, I'm sending them back), and I know for sure that noctuas do well horizontally, and last a *long* time

I already had the nf-f12 and these seem like 14cm versions of the same fan, just no pwm (motherboard supports voltage regulation, pwm regulation, and case supports voltage reg)

I may eventually replace the fractal design R2s with cougars

Now how should I do can configuration?

Fractal on top front and top back, Noctua on bottom and bottom front?

Or 2 fractals on front and noctua on back and bottom?

Were the noctuas a bad idea? I posted this and a few hours later ordered before I had responses (why didn't I get email notification on my posts?!?)

I would fit 140mm fans wherever possible, if noise is an concern. If cooling is more of a priority than noise, then I would use 120mm fans anywhere there is any significant resistance (ie intakes with HDD Cages directly behind them; anything more than the case grills).

One of the best fans for the money are the 140mm Rosewill Hyperborea fans, and they also provide more static pressurethan many 120mm fans. TheBgears Blasters are the best 140mm fans I've used in terms of performance, but they are sometimes too loud for some people's tastes.

If you have a fan controller, I recommend buying fans more powerful than you think you need, so as to have a bit of headroom in terms of cooling power.
