i7-940 OC 3.8GHz on h20 Advice Needed

I ran at 3.6 Ghz for the last 2 days and stable on Prime 95 but at 3.8MHz PC would lock up immediately when Prime 95 was activated?
Tried a lot of recommendations from various GUIDE's like a bull in a China Closet but bringing the voltages up a little more like (some said to) got it stable so it seems.
No lock ups yet. But temps seemed high considering my cooling system. Water lines were only luke warm as if the CPU water block / Thermal Paste not transferring heat off the CPU? Motherboard did start to beep very random and various length's in time.
Possible RAM temp? There is not water cooling on the RAM. The EXOS 750 showed 134 degree's on the external RAM temp sensor.
I am very unsure of my RAM timing and I do not understand all I know about overclocking and with all the available settings...I'm so confused.
:-) Was not real easy to get 3.8 but I think 4.0 should be obtainable.
It seems the 920's are amazing and popular. I don't find much info on the 940's but I guess it all applies?
When I bought the 940 it was a middle of the road $500 CPU and I thought would be easier to oc then the 920.
Just hoping maybe someone may look and find some bonehead error's that may get me to 4.0GHz and maybe bring the temps down.
Nothing seemed to make 3.8 stable except for bringing the voltage's back up tho. I must be honest at 3.6 the voltages where as high or higher except the memory was lower @ 1.6v

RealTempGT 3.70 loaded before Prime95
Prime95 (set at In-Place Large FFT's) approximately 40 minutes
Temps via Realtemp c1=84c / c2=83c / c3=82c / c4=81c max temps reached during test.
Consistently running at 78c to 80c+ on all cores after 20 minutes!! Ouch!

A 940 should do 3,8 GHz fairly easy and with 1,35V vcore you should be one the better side of 4.0GHz.

I could not find your memorys rated timings or MHz so if you could tel me that.

The high BLCK low multi is a 920 trick and you should not be using it on a 940. Set your memory ratio to "stock" resulting in the ram running @ something like 1400-1600 depending on your BLCK, set your CPU multiplier (CPU Clock Ratio on your mobo?) to x23 or x22 (as high as it will go) then adjust the BLCK so your CPU runs at 4.0Ghz. Now see if it will boot. If not drop back the BLCK so the CPU runs at 3,9 and try again.

Edit: Oh and bump up the IHO to 1.2

Edit2: It might also be a good idea to disable speed step at least while your finding your OC and re enable it afterwards. Personally I can't have speedstep enabled when I run my 920 at 4.0 but many can have it one without issues.

Sorry for the delay, I have had some apparent file coruption/driver problems and reverted back to Fail Safe Defaults in BIOS.
Recently it on showed up when running Game Booster (instant BSOD) which used to run fine.
Overclocked at 3.6 I had run MS Flight Sim no problems and memtest in DOS a long with Prime95 all ok.
Moved to 3.8GHz after many immediate locks when trying to start Prime95 but finally after many BIOS changes ran Prime 95 for approx 40 mins all ok.
So I decided to run Shift2...instant BSOD. Un-install...re-install Shift2 same BSODs
Things seem ok now but will run sfc /scannow since it showed some errors last round. Maybe Prime95 and see if Shift2 will load before I
bump the BIOS again.
Thanx for your quick response. I am happy to hear that my settings are so wrong and the 940 is actually different than the 920 as this may explain my failures.

So up the BLCK to 177 and then to 180 and see if your system still stays stable. I'm also pretty sure you should set the System Memory Multiplier to 8 and run the ram 1400Mhz (700Mhz single rate as shown in CPU-z). Ram is a big part of x58 overclocking. Having the "native" memory multiplier increases stability.

If you get a BSOD be sure to take the code down (its the last few characters that are important). You can also use the BlueScreenViewer --> http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/blue_screen_view.html if you are to slow or lazy to use pen and paper.

Prime95 Run over 30 mins - Blend Test
Max Temps Full Fan/Full Pump Speed - Computer and EXOS 750 very dusty. Ambient room temp cold 65 to 69 F.
Max Temps in Realtemp GT 3.70 - 91c-91c-88c-87c
BIOS vCore changed to 1.4v in BIOS / CPU-Z Core Voltage = 1.360v idle and drops to 1.344 under 100% load in Prime95
Bumped QPI/VTT to 1.32v just because I was there jacking anyway. smile.gif
It seems to like vcore.
Load in Prime95 running Blend test. 30 minutes+
Test stopped by user due to questionable temps. Finally!

Set the to PLL: 1.88 and QPI/Vtt Voltage to 1.35. Up the BLCK to 180. Then test stability and after that if stable try and reduce vcore to 1.375v and if still good then 1.35v.

Its a C0 stepping so its a bit more vcore hungry then the D0 by average but I still think you can get it to 4.0Ghz with less then 1.40 vcore.

One issue is that your chip is running to hot. As heat increases so does instability you really should clean that radiator of yours and ramp up the fans speed. At least to get the temps under 80°C.

Test1: OK. Blew the dust out...wasn't that bad after all. The side cover fan screen was the worst of it, the rest was minimal dust.
I did clean the heatsink and cpu and re-installed with Arctic Silver.
Temps are still too high no real change. I may be using too much TP.
Tried QPI/Vtt @ 1.34v my BIOS skips 1.35 and jumps to 1.36v??
QPI/PLL @ 1.88v and vCore @ 1.3750v
Set BCLK to 180 x22 (3.96GHz) Prime 95 Locked after a few seconds. (No BSOD just hard locked)

Test2: Re set BCLK to 175 (3.85GHz)
vCore in CPU-Z shows lower @ 1.328v (BIOS shows 1.3750v) Lock after 10 mins running Prime95...again no BSOD. 86c max temp reached.

Test3 : Set vCore @ 1.3875v ( CPU-Z shows 1.36 idle and dropping to 1.344v with Prime now running.
Fail: BSOD . (A Clock Interrupt was not received on a Secondary Processor within the time Interval.)
This has been the BSOD error every time since I started to pay attention.

Test4: Retry with Load Line Calibration Disabled. Prime froze...Lockup.

Test5:Set vCore to Auto. CPU-Z now showing 1.36v @ idle
CPU-Z vCore dropping to 1.344v and holding while Prime is running.
Only ran for 10+ min before I shut it down as temps hit a max of 91c.

It will boot at 4+ GHz load win7, but won't run Prime.
Tomorrow I will clean CPU/Heatsink and try to refrain from using to much thermal paste.
It just seems wrong to see these temps...they climb to 70c immediately in Prime and gradually run up to 80c then max at or hover at 87 to 91c in ten minutes.
Seems real wrong on water?? The water lines only get luke warm and I know it don't mean much but the external thermister taped to the top of the CPU waterblock
(which is plastic) never sees 34c??? (That exact probe is displaying its temp on the front of the EXO v2) It's like heat is just not transferring from the CPU to the waterblock??
I see much lower temps posted on oc's with air.
Note: The results of the EX58-UD5 vcore were better in Auto than the previous test with manual vCore set at 1.3875v. ???

CPU-Z vCore dropping to 1.344v and holding while Prime is running.
Only ran for 10+ min before I shut it down as temps hit a max of 91c.

It will boot at 4+ GHz load win7, but won't run Prime.
Tomorrow I will clean CPU/Heatsink and try to refrain from using to much thermal paste.
It just seems wrong to see these temps...they climb to 70c immediately in Prime and gradually run up to 80c then max at or hover at 87 to 91c in ten minutes.
Seems real wrong on water?? The water lines only get luke warm and I know it don't mean much but the external thermister taped to the top of the CPU waterblock
(which is plastic) never sees 34c??? (That exact probe is displaying its temp on the front of the EXO v2) It's like heat is just not transferring from the CPU to the waterblock??
I see much lower temps posted on oc's with air.
Note: The results of the EX58-UD5 vcore were better in Auto than the previous test with manual vCore set at 1.3875v. ???

More likely the heat is not transferring form the block to the water. Possibly the CPU block is clogged or the block it self is not all that great. Am I correct in assuming the EXOS 750 had a thin dual radiator? If so its not surprising that big air coolers have similar performance as your loop is probably not much better the a H100.
