Using more then 4 gpus in Windows, whats possible?

Thread Starter
does any game let you use 4 dual GPU cards? or even 5 gpus?

And does window even run with 8 gpus? I have allways been under the impression that 4 gpus was the max that windows can handle. But I have been out of the loop for a while so anything is possible smile.gif

What about Benchmarking? I built my PC a year or so back for that purpose and everybody I seen on benchmark sits and wat-not had 4 gpu setups. So what about say 3dmark? can that use and score more then 4 gpus?

Also of questions I know smile.gif but I find this stuff very interesting.

Thanks, Sir Overkill.

If you could tri-fire 6990 or GTX 690, then sure you could

as far as im aware 4 is the max as most "mainstream" mobos only support up to 4 pcie-slots. If you were to go high end server than i guess you could have as many as you see fit, windows doesnt really care how many you have (as far as i know, correct me if im wrong) but the software ie 3dmark, heaven etc. Only support a certain amount of cards (pretty sure 4 is max, again correct me if im wrong).

Hope that helps...

4 is the driver limit for gaming multi-GPU systems, the market for 5+ GPUs are non-existent so AMD/Nvidia won't bother supporting it, not to mention diminishing returns with every additional card that at this point would almost negate potential performance increase.

Windows itself does not care how many GPUs are there. You can get 4 PCI-E slot motherboard, put 4 dual-GPU card in there and say use them for folding or any other computational task, by assigning GPUs to each program.
