Phenom 9850 questions - Page 2

Cool. Good to know. I am planning on rebuilding my p4 rig soon to make a lil home server. Primarily for movies. But any gaming machine I build now HAS to be min dual core, running something like 2.8Ghz. Anything less and I get huge lags w my HD textures and stuff. It just can't seem to move the data to the GPU fast enough, or handle the memory (even tho mine is jus about the cheapest memory available) transfers. I dunno, it just sux. Annnnyyyyywhoooooo, UPDATE!!!

Sitting pretty right now at 200x13 (2.7)@ 1.125v. Running stress, watching temps. It would seem that even tho this chip idles higher, It still seems to be cooler under load than that athlon I had. I'm guessing it handles it's heat better, and that it uses the power more efficiently than the brisbanes ever could. Max load temp so far has been around 117F. Wish I could do conversions in my head, and weren't so lazy to use a calculator....lol The brisbane would idle around 89, whereas this agena sits nicely about 98F. And the brisbane would load to 125F, 10 whole degrees more than this bigger, faster chip. So for now, it would seem my cooling is adequate. Next steps are: better oc board, able to handle 140w+ cpu, bigger gpu> or better heatsink for my 8800, and more hdds. I have a storage fetish.

For now, I think I'm about done here. I will eventually post back (and check back each day) for my end clock and temps, but for now I'll just s.t.f.u.

Okie Doooookkieeeeeeee...Update time. For anyone interested. Sitting @ 2530Mhz. That's 220x11.5@ 1.1v If my maths are correct thats about 106w. Which my little board should handle reliably for a while to come. Its listed there, if you want specs. There is AMPLE air flow inside the case. There are only 2 static spots, one around the sound card and LAN card area, and the other between the dvd drives and the psu. The rest has total flow with very little hot spots. The area between the video and cpu stays warmer, but that's just the nature of these things. My temps stay around 93 idle (ambient is around 68-72F) and load up to something like 112F. So not too bad. Warmer than I would like, but manageable.

This will be the last post from me most likely, unless someone brings up something interesting.

You could lock it to three cores and that should take care of the power consumption/VRM concern, while giving you better single-thread performance and retaining 1 extra core over your Brisbane.

I don't know what your board is, but I suggest you don't ignore the rated TDP concern. Failing to comply might result in more than just your "rig turning off and never turning on again"... some instances have involved rather violent failures with fires, sparks and explosions - at least one incident of which has sent the fire department to a person's house.

OOOOOOO.....fire! Don't tell me that, I'm a pyro. I might OC it too much on purpose.....lol j/k I'm pretty sure the board was designed to handle more than what the specs say. These things are all alike, ratings are based off of the weakest found tested link in a batch. If all boards test stably and reliably at 115w, but one only took 96w before it went, they will rate it just under that, so 95w.....safe side. Just like CPU, some will OC to 5Ghz, while others from the same batch on the same day will only go to 3Ghz (assuming average stock clock around middle 2Gig). Luck of the draw thing. I'm pretty sure if it didn't go while OCin my 5200+ to 115w, running this phenom at 106w shouldn't cause too much of an issue. I'm planning on having a much bigger, better system by the time this one has a chance to go anyway.
