Popularity isn't so much the issue (FFXI?). It's more to do with company politics restricting developer freedom and developers not taking proper advanatge of the system (whether by choice or not). Console gamers would welcome a good MMO if done right in a way that takes advanatge of the functions their console has on offer.

PSO did alright, though obviously not up to WoW standards.

I completely disagree with you. MMO's, if done right, can very much suit a console. Controls have nothing to do with it. Hell I play Guild Wars 2, The Secret World, and SWTOR with a control pad and use voice chat. If a developer tailors their game for a console/control pad experience, instead of porting it from PC, the controls would never be an issue. Halo Wars is a great example of a primarily PC genre being done right on a console. Even isometric style RPGs can be done well on a console (if not better, though that's personal opinion), aswell as MOBA (Guardians of Middle Earth).

The problem here is that people think MMO, then think PC. They think keyboard and mouse and having a trillion skills to use all at once. Some games don't play by that method, even on PC (The Secret World, Guild Wars 2), and can fit their control schemes onto a control pad. Even targeting can be done quite easily if it's implemented as a core feature from the offset instead of having to be tacked on via third party software (Sacred 2 does targeting right for a control pad on console versions).

The reason people think MMO's on consoles would fail due to controls is because no one has really designed one to use control pads properly before on a PC with keyboard and mouse being a primary control device. Actually I only know of one MMO that even supports control pad properly. Global Agenda. And you know what? It works just fine (I used to rank fairly well as a Medic Class).

Make a MMO built for console from the ground up and there would never be an issue regarding controls. People can aim perfectly fine with control pads, you just choose to ignore the fact people can do so because you want to hold onto the stigma that keyboard and mouse is "infinitely" better. It's not a competition and, regardless of how you feel about it, players will have a ton of fun on their chosen platform using a control device they're comfortable with.

If it wasn't for Halo, what would they have under their belt after 2000 even remotely in the ranks of the halo franchise as far as being known as good goes?

That doesn't mean they made bad games however. Oni (well I loved it anyway) and Marathon were pretty good for their day. Also don't forget Bungie were tied into a contract with Microsoft so it wasn't like they had time to make anything other than Halo between each title.

After reading what he said again, I Kind of get it but I won't give bungie any credit for it, they were the last ones to arrive.
But let's face, few people likes to play old style FPS's nowadays, if that was the case serious sam would be top dog. The style FPS had back in the 90's is a very marginalized niche.
Looking at the RPS quote:

[quote)
“We did a bunch of ambitious things on Halo deliberately to reach out to people. We limited players to two weapons, we gave them recharging health, we automatically saved and restored the game – almost heretical things to first-person shooters at the time. We made the game run without a mouse and keyboard. And now nobody plays shooters the way they used to play them before Halo ’cause nobody wants to.”
[/quote]

You can easily see that mouse and keyboard is just a part of his statement, and let's be honest about it. How many times in the last year have you used quad damge, conq jump or rocket jump? Yeah sure TF2 but that's one game in a whole universe of semi reality games.

well, anyway. i'm mor eupset that he's taking credit for it, taking credit for anything at all to be fair. Acting like that annoying guy who joins a project at the end and take all the credit, then formulating himself like this proving to everyone in near vicinity that he never was capable of anything more advanced than ctrl-c ctrl-v

Color me confused. You eliminated all but one game from them by saying since 2000 but not Halo. Oni was 2001 and was just an above-average game. But over the last 12 years they haven't done anything but 5 Halo games, so how can we realistically consider what would have happened without it?

As for forgetting their roots, remember it's Activision, not Bungie, calling the shots on what platforms happen.

Bungie haven't made any other games since Halo: Reach, Destiny will be their first release since, so I don't see how that is even remotely possible.

Oh boy, another game that I won't be purchasing.

Hm....I don't think anyone's mentioned this yet when talking about games that have all been cookie cutter, and how the long for the days of UT and Quake. (Also, holy crap, UT3 came out almost 6 years ago!)

Tribes: Ascend. They've "modernized" the Tribes formula, and kept it going, but it definitely is catering a bit more to the "new-age" gamers. Full-auto weapons (which most people are terrible with; welcome to the Z-axis, scrubs!), health regen, only 2 weapons, small(er) maps, and simplified capping routes.

I think it says something when CTF is the mode of choice for Tribes, while Call Gears of Honor Field Battle Duty: Modern Op Reach's main draw is "murdercrap for points" mode. Just saying. thumb.gif

I still think this ends up on PC. I think Activision is gonna realize that this game will be lucrative enough on PC that it'll be worth supporting.

and just because it bears repeating

Actual quote from Bungie not altered by "journalists":
Quote:
“We did a bunch of ambitious things on Halo deliberately to reach out to people. The bolded isn't even mostly about mouse and keyboard, but the part that is you'd be foolish to try to release a FPS without controller support even for PC exclusives. Attempting to deny that Halo: CE changed the direction of the entire genre is foolish. Wish OCN would stop finding articles that already bend the truth and then bend it further just to be outraged.

Bungie has confirmed its new online shooter Destiny will be released for "future console platforms," alongside Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

Though it didn't confirm any more details, last year's leaked documents suggested that a version of the game would be released on the next-gen Xbox in autumn 2013.
A PC release, mentioned in the same docs, has not been officially announced. However Bungie COO Pete Persons told Examiner that the studio would "love to be on the PC" and to "stay tuned".[/B
