Pricing Out 32GB of DDR3-2400 vs. 32GB of DDR3-1600

Just curious but what are the main differences between this more expensive Corsair memory (32GB, DDR3-2400, $541.98)

versus this less expensive Patriot memory? (32GB, DDR3-1600, $199.99 )

I see that the timing on the Corsair is 10-12-12-31 so does that mean that higher timing is always better performance? (Faster?) Or is that what the "DDR3-2400" spec indicates more than the timings?

Higher frequency, lower timings are faster/better. Corsair ram is usually more expensive compared to other ram brands. Not sure why though.

2400Mhz Cas10 is heaps faster than 1600MHz Cas9.

In reality, the lower the timing the better the memory performs.

for starters, the corsair is 2400 ram while the patriot is 1600. higher the speed higher the cost in most cases. also the corasir platinums quite possibly use better IC's on the sticks. tho IMO corsair platium's are over priced. if you want 32GB of 2400 RAM, G.skill TridentX are better value for money.

Probably a %5 increase in overall system performance, I'm guessing here.

Some of the reason the Corsair ram is that expensive is 8gb sticks running that speed and timings is pretty fast. Can't get much faster then those speeds in 8gb sticks and new fast computer stuff comes at a premium cost.

I strongly doubt that the slight performance benefit you might get with the DDR3-2400 would even begin to be worth it.

The timings represent the number of clock cycles needed to perform a memory operation. You'll need to do some trivial math to get the real ('wall") time- the clock speed is in cycles/second.

The 2400 ram just has to run looser (higher number timings) timings to reach the higher speed. I grabbed a set of 32Gb G.Skill 1866 cas 10 and run them at 1600 cas 9 (running 1866 puts too much voltage to my VCCSA of 1.25v vs 1600 at 1.10v). So you could go with the Trident 1866 just so you have the option to run them at higher speeds.

Just be aware that your 2600K will not be able to run ram past 2133; the integrated memory controller is limiting. I wouldn't recommend buying 2400.
