What sort of GPU is required for 3D gaming on 3DTV ?

Hello fellow geeks!!!! <3

the time has come to upgrade my graphics card, reason being i have just built a racing simulator pod with a logitech g25 setup, and will be buying a Sony 55HX850 in the next week, and want to be able to play some kickass games in 3D !!!
Here is a picture for those interested http://iforce.co.nz/i/xfnegm5n.kqm.jpg

The TV is Active 3D

This won't be solely racing games, any PC game i feel that will be better on the bigscreen i shall play, otherwise it will be on my 1200p IPS Dell.

as HDMI is limited to 720p 50/60Hz 3D,1080p 24Hz 3D i will be playing in 720p resolutions, but also for non 3D gaming it will be 1080p with all the eyecandy enabled.

would it be fair to say that 3D is going to use twice the processing power, as its delivering twice as many images? i plan to use nvidia's 3D Play technology as it supports my tv for this.

The card i have in mind is the geforce gtx670 2gb (research shows that 4gb doesnt really seem to benefit unless its a multi monitor setup, some games will push to 3gb)

Would this be enough to handle all of the latest games at 1080p, and perform flawlessly at 720p 3D ?

My current specs are ..

Gigabyte P67A-UD4-B3
i7 2600k @ 5ghz
8gb g.skill ripjaws X CAS8
Asus gtx465 <---- waaaaaaah what a baby card LOL, but is doing me for now smile.gif
XFX 650Watt 80+ Bronze Modular

Would i benefit from more RAM also for gaming? i assume not.

If overclocking is required im happy to do this also .. so happy to look at options that have good cooler setups, twin frozr etc.

Or do i wait for the next generation nvidia cards to come out ? (to be honest if this isn't too far away i wouldnt mind, simply because a friend bought a gtx670 and id like to show him up!! tongue.gif:p:thumb:

Thanks for the time reading this and your input!

You're not going to see performance gains with upgrading your RAM, leave them as they are. As far as waiting for the new cards goes, you can always wait if you want. That's 100% up to you. I just think that if you want to play NOW, you should upgrade NOW smile.gif The waiting-game is never-ending if you want the best for your money.

i appreciate this smile.gif does anyone have any idea when the new cards are coming out? .. my mind may rapidly change to that same mindset once i get my TV and see how my gtx465 performs ! LOL .. currently i have no issues with the card, but i feel 3D may definitely change that.

I am a bit of an nvidia fanboy .. the gtx670 definitely seems to be the way to go price/valuewise .. and i understand it can overclock to hit 680 performance also, right?

Yes it can. But imagine what the GTX 680 overclocks to in that case biggrin.gif

It seems like the 700 series will be released during "Spring". I read someone stating that it's in April, but I honestly don't know if there's an official date announced. It shouldn't be long though.

from what ive read the GTX670 and GTX680 perform very similar when overclocked?

http://www.overclock.net/t/1258755/overclocking-and-benchmarking-gtx-670-vs-gtx-680

The price difference between the 670 and 680 here are as follows

EVGA GeForce GTX 670 FTW 2GB $55 1USD

EVGA GeForce GTX 680 SC 2GB $674 USD

cards are expensive here in new zealand frown.gif

As I just wrote in my last post, if you bothered reading it rolleyes.gif

An overclocked 670 is on par with a STOCK 680. There's no way a 670 beats an overclocked 680.

stock 670 < stock 680
OC 670 = 680

CONCLUSIONS
From reviews we already knew that a Overclocked 670 could beat an stock 680. But comparing a good overclocked 680 with a good overclocked 670 shows that performance are very close.
Just check the forums to confirm that the 670 is a better overclocker than the 680. The difference in overclock overhead almost makes up for disabled SMX in the 670 providing 680 performance at a 80% of its price.
This specific Gigabyte 670 is a great deal because:
It’s a custom design but it does not cost more than the reference cards
It uses the same PCB design than its big brother. Just the better power delivery gives you better opportunity to attain a higher overclocks
The cooler is better way better than reference, 10C to 20C cooler, a critical point if you don’t want to loose 13Mhz when reaching 70C. (unfurtunatelly I still reached up to 73C in BF3)

I never said a 680 beats an OC'ed 670. I said an OC'ed 680 will beat and OC'ed 670. If that wasn't the case, there would be no point in even making the 680 from Nvidia's part tongue.gif
