Making the switch to AMD FX series for new build. Which chips/ setup are the best Overclockers?

Hello everyone!

Thanks as always for the great community here! I've been here for a couple years and always seem to get the insight I need!
Up to this point I've strictly used the Phenom II series (555BE, followed by 960T, and 965BE) for my builds/OC projects. I feel (correct me if I'm wrong) that if I truly want the next step of OC potential, I should be pursuing something from the FX line of processors. I've been really happy with ASUS boards (used the M4a88td-v EVO) with great success overclocking all of the aforementioned processors. I know that they have great overclock ratings and I'd like to stay with a similar board.

This all being said, what chips are going to allow me to get the best overclock from your experience? I definitely want the RAW power that allows me to open programs, bootup windows, unzip files, etc. very quickly. What I don't know is whether or not I need an eight core processor to achieve those gains. I know it will be faster than six core of course, but are the gains that noticeable in everyday use? I have a rough idea of what I want my system to be comprised of and it is as follows:

MB: Asus board with good OC interface (not married to asus, if anyone has a better suggestion please say so)

RAM: Some high speed Gskill Ripjaws (12GB?)

HD: SSD for OS / 2TB for storage

PS: Seasonic +/- 700W

Cooling: water cooling perhaps? smile.gif

Video: Open for suggestions but I'd like something with at least 1GB of RAM and 256bit interface (I want to be able to play all games on at least high settings) ** I want to be able to play Crysis 3, Far Cry 3, other action/RPG games

All suggestions are welcomed!

I just purchased and my the rig in my sig on t he 15th. I can Tell you the fx 6300 6 core is a great chip and good ocer. I personally have mine at 4.2ghz/1.35v. I can def go higher but I chose not to right now, plus I have a cheaper mobo msi 970a-g46. Video card wise the amd hd 7850 is great price/performance. The 1gb version does not hinder games even at 1080p. Not to mention they are comming with bioshock infinte and new tomb raider. I play the Witcher 2 @ 1080p ultra, no uber sampling though and it plays great. This is good stuff for great price!

Future proof the 8 core would be great seeing as how consoles are gonna have 8 core amds smile.gif

I chose the 6core because ill wait to buy an 8 core steamroller.

The 7850 is also a good overclocker. I picked sapphire for price and dual fans. mine is at 1125mhz core/1300 mem. Can go higher but not pushing alot of voltage on it.

I goit everything in my sig for around ~720$ after rebates, even montior!
