SP120 Quiet vs. High Performance (w/ fan controller)

Thread Starter
I bought the High Performance but I'm wondering if this was the right choice. I'm all for silence, and I barely ever my fans on full.

The reviews were better for the Quiet edition: I was wondering if simply turning the fans down with the controller would offer the same quiet-level/performance ratio?

This is to replace a GT-15 and a stock nanoxia DS1 fan.
I also got an AF-140 for the rear exhaust to replace the stock Nanoxia fan.

So it'll be:
2 x SP120 intake
1 x AF140 exhaust

AF-120's = Quiet Edition best
SP-120's = Performance Edition best IMO

I think you made the right choice. I'm all for silence too, but that doesn't mean that I want my rig to not be cooled properly. I suppose you're using the SP-120's for rads or something alike?

Nope, just case intake. I don't do watercooling. I have a 2500k to 4.4Ghz but only when playing BF3. I cool it with a Silver Arrow.

I basically want to ensure my passive noise is as low as can be: I game with sound so the rest doesn't matter too much.
Id get the AF Performance Edition, not the Quiet. You can use the 7V step down adapter to lower the speed and noise to Quiet Edition levels. The Quiet Edition can use a 7V step down as well, but then the air flow really is minimal for the decibles lowered.

I wouldn't recommend using SP fans for case flow. The SP fans (Static Pressure) are designed for radiators, and AF fans (Air Flow) are for general air flow in the case. The SP fans are going to make more noise than the AF's if they're just for case intake.

In my experience using cooler fans as case fans has been a beneficial and not a problem. It has lowered temps with no increase in noise.. often making system quieter.
Completely agree with the above. Static pressure is too often overlooked in fans that will be used for case fans, but the reality is that it's just as important as the airflow itself. Youccan have a 200cfm fan but if it has 0.2mmH2O, you will get very poor airflow. There are tons of obstructions in cases, particularly for the intakes, and the better a fan is at overcoming the restrictions the more air will actually make it in to cool the components.

I went with a hybrid config: the SP120 in front of the HDD cage (to benefit from the higher pressure and get the air through the cage), and the Gentle Typhoon above where there is no HDD cage component to benefit from the higher airflow.
