CaseLabs Mercury S3 Mini-ITX Case: Now Shipping!! - Page 69

I'll never use three cards. mATX restrains my spending, while ITX restricts my options.
That's why it's always good to make something for every one.

this is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. Who needs more than 16GB of ram? Who? Maybe 0.5% of people. Also the performance difference vs cost of X79 vs Z77 makes IB/SB a much better choice. Being an enthusiast isn't just about spending the most money, it's also about getting the most out of what you have.

I agree. Most people going with ITX wouldn't need more than 16GB (2x8GB) of ram. I can only think of a couple of instances where it would help, but for the gaming and most of the enthusiast crowd, not going to help anyone really.

I still feel most people can do with mATX just fine as well. If you look at the majority of rigs here people have, they have huge full tower or bigger cases... then only use 1 video card and no other expansion slots... Or they'll just have 2 video cards, or 1 video and a sound card... Hardly does anyone actually take advantage of a full ATX motherboard with 3 or 4 way SLI -or- CF, except for a few who have more money than they know what to do with. I can probably name off most of them by mind from the few builds I've subbed over time here tongue.gif

ATX and bigger are largely wastes unless you are a true enthusiast running 3-4-way SLI, 2-4P system, or a *** hilariously large file server with tons of RAID // Expansion cards. I just feel there's too much in terms of diminishing returns the larger you go ( as with a lot of things really ), unless you're in a select field.

Just my opinion though biggrin.gif

Plenty of people have a computer they don't need. Define need after all? A man was put on the moon with less. The atomic bomb was designed with less. The theory of relativity was not figured out with 32gigglebunnies of RAM. But looking at funny cat videos at 120Hz on multiple monitors with my expensive shiny box is what I want to do thumb.gif

Most people don't need more than 4GB of memory, and that's with the OS using 1.5GB by itself! Granted, OCN isn't most people, but unless you sit around all day running 8 VMs, gaming, folding, and watching a movie, you don't need more than 16GB.

Yeah, I never realized how little ram is used, while running a game and skype and a web browser and everything I was maxing at 3.7gb of ram used, I was very surprised.

I want one now! You can take my prodigy...

My PC is overkill for my needs now...guess where its going in the future...yes, even more overkill.

Why: This has become my hobby, its fun, its a glorified erector set, I like to build ****, my knees are blown so no more hardcore atheletics, I have 5 kids (all girls) and its my man cave thing, as I add more stuff I learn more things I can do with it (which is fun), I'm going to cram as much crap into this thing as I can.

I'm at a stage in my life where I can splurge a bit -- and this is better than wasting it on more expensive food, more expensive wine, more expensive booze, I no longer give a **** about having the hot car, I'm not a clothes hound, etc, etc, etc

Hit 50 with a little extra money to spend, the question isn't WHY, the question is WHY THE HELL NOT.

Everybody makes choices what to do with their discretionary time/money...this is mine.

Not to mention those that do all this because it is or supports their livelihood.

And if you're thing is how to create the most optimized thingy in the smallest package you can, more power to you.
