CaseLabs Mercury S3 Mini-ITX Case: Now Shipping!! - Page 76

SO.

I got both the air coolers I wanted to try, got my mobo (MSI), and got out my GPU, and HOLY DANCING MOSES, there's no room for the CPU cooler to face the same direction as the case airflow...
To all major motherboard builders that have Z77 mITX offerings: I AM DISSAPOINT.

So I'm going to test both the Xigmatek DKII (with an Akasa Viper 140-120mm PWM fan) and a Zalman CP9500 turned 90 degrees to the flow to see what I get.

Grr.

Thanks - T

I used the Asus P8Z77-I Deluxe for my prodigy build, I think it's the only one that doesn't jam the CPU up against the PCI-E slot.

Yeah, but ASUS = no bueno for me, and the tall board part on the front will add to my wiring worries more than this temporary cooling solution.

There is a $1,200 wish list on FrozenCPU.com waiting to be purchased, upon which time this rig will be wet, and air will be a thing of the past!

Thanks - T

Yeah if you know you're going water then worst case just turn the clocks down (if the temps suck with the cooler rotated). No point spending money to improve a temporary setup

Yeah, if you recall from a much earlier post, I'm running stock clocks anyway... rolleyes.gif

I'm not going to boost anything until I can get it wet!

The Xigmatek is a vertical flat-bladed design, so turned sideways, it will completely block incoming air, but the Zalman is the "flower-style", so it will at least aid with cross flow.
Plus, Zalman's copper is SO much better lapped and higher quality, even though Xigmatech has that new ceramic coating...
I'll be trying both!

Thanks - T

;-)

While I would have to admit that their offering is a very sexy little box (especially for a server) - it's got some major issues with expandability. First of all is that if you use any of the front drives or a long card... watercooling even with mods is completely out of the question. Unless there was an unobstructed 120mm fan on the back I missed that is. Secondly, although the design aesthetic really appeals to me (it reminds me of rendering workstations of several years ago - like a modern version of an SGI Octane or Indigo) - I can tell just by looking at it that the build quality will not come close. Not talking about finish - theirs looks pretty nice, but that's some thin metal and between the way the drives mount and the panels seem to sit... I think it would be good for a single build and maybe one upgrade before things would be getting tweaked enough that it would be difficult to work with.

Still, if they could get them over here for less than $150... I'd build something in one of them... I'm a sucker for micro servers. biggrin.gif I think if you did some careful modding it could make one heck of an attractive HTPC if you are putting it on the floor or in a cabinet.

EDIT: ...And that ends that idea... just looked up the price for the B20 from them... without shipping, customs, etc... it's $265 (25K yen)... so I'm assuming that the A90 will be priced similarly if not slightly higher. Not even close to the same value for the money... although it is a bit "prettier" depending on what you like I guess. However, considering the new colors - I'd call it a draw even in the aesthetics department.

But then again I'm pretty much a CaseLabs fanboy at this point and I don't even care. biggrin.gif

My guess is they're running around like headless chickens because they're trying to be ready for the first 20 or so orders... just from people in this thread alone. Plus Jim is still recovering and it is a pretty small operation still (bigger than it was though wink.gif ) still...

I know I won't be disappointed.. but yeah, I'm pretty impatient too. biggrin.gif
