PC randomly turns off

Thread Starter
Sometimes when I play games, my PC randomly turns off. It won't turn on again for a good 30 seconds. My temperatures are not hot when this happens (GTX 570 @ 60C and i7 920 stock @ 45C). Furthermore, lately sleep mode has been kind of acting strangely, not working or barely responding at all (for example, when I pressed the mouse/keyboard 5 minutes ago to get out of sleep mode, it took 15 seconds for the PC to react and suddenly turn on). Also, during sleep mode, it tends to randomly wake up at night, obviously without anyone even near.
I can live with the sleep mode issues, but the PC turning off is very annoying, obviously. In fact, it has also happened the last week when it's idle. I first thought it might be the power distribution in this apartment, but the light next to me which is on the same outlet as the PC stays on, so it can't be that.
Any ideas?

What would bios have to do with anything? Could it maybe be a short circuit somewhere? There definitely isn't a leak in my water cooling set up.
Maybe a loose cable... I don't want anything to break before I can upgrade to Haswell frown.gif

Please tell us absolutely anything that has changed with your computer since a week+ before this started happening. EX New software, new updates, new drivers, moving stuff around, etc.

Random shutdowns/restarts often point to a failing PSU if there arent heat issues with the CPU.

Regarding the unexpected turn-ons: Is your BIOS configured to wake up the computer if something comes in over the network or any dial-up modem or if the mouse simply moves?

Shut-down like that is often heat related. Either the PSU is being strained (common if the PSU is junk or has some bad capacitors inside, and caps can fail without bulging or leaking), or the CPU is getting hot because the heatsink isn't making good contact. That can happen with a water block if any stiff hoses are applying strain.

I would agree my first thing I would check is the PS that is more then likely your issue there as for turning on randomly it could be your PS but more then likely something is set in your BOIS to make it wake up.
