Lightning 7970 or 680

Hi Everyone,

After some advice regarding cards, I am looking to pickup one of the above cards. However i don't know what the best one to get at this time. MSI has always treated me well with my cards and I'm upgrading off of two MSI 460's in SLI. However With bother 7970 and 680 being in the same price range and comparable, I'm not sure which to go with.

I will be playing a 1920x1080 at this time, but am going to be adding a 2nd monitor in a couple months. I am playing Borderlands 2, Skyrim and Mechwarrior Online, eventually Elder Scrolls Online when it comes out. I'm limited to a two slot GPU, and from what I can tell, these are the best ones from what I have read. However I can't find any newer reviews or articles about these two specifically.

If you can only fit 1 two slots card, I suggest to wait for a GTX Titan as it will be released very soon. But if you cant wait go for the 7970, it is much better value for money and overclocks past GTX 680 and beyond. Also the Lightning is always a very reliable card and MSI are at the top when i8t comes to 7xxx Graphics

You can't really go wrong with either.

Go 680 if you've been happy with Nvidia over the last few years, go 7970 if you feel like changing it up. I was able to snag my 7970 Lightning for $380 on an Amazon warehouse deal, while the 680 Lightning was still $500 or more. It was an easy decision for me.

My card is running 1275/1550 on 1.3V, watercooled.

I'd say 7970, since 7970 wins in the 680 vs 7970 war, it is a better OC'er and you can overvolt.
Also if you do keep the card for a long time and eventually go for multi display gaming, in my opinion, AMD eyefinity is much better than nVidia Surround.

Well i can find any sort of deal on the 7970 and its now $100 higher than the 680.
Should i go for a lightning or is a Power Edition (PE) worth picking up? Its around $50 cheaper.

the HD 7970 lightning is better than power edition. it comes with higher stock clocks - 1070 mhz on lightning vs 925 on power edition. thats like insurance if you get a poor overclocker. definitely worth 50 bucks. also HD 7970 is faster than GTX 680

Thats not the issue, i cant find any deals for the 7970 Lightning, it looks like they are all out of stock or discontinued. All that i've found are over $600 by quite a bit.
