Club3D Geforce 7800 GS ... bottleneck?

Hi all

I've just replaced my XFX 6600 GT with a brand new 7800 GS. I bought a widescreen monitor which works at 1650x1080 and at these resolutions the 6600 GT began to be too slow...that's why I decided to upgrade to a 7800 GS and now I've got my games running as fast as they ran with the 6600 GT and my old 1280x1024 screen (i.e. HL2, AA4x, AF8x, reflect all, Vsynch on...). The fact is that my mb is an asus P4P800-E Deluxe with 2 GB ram running at 320 Mhz and a Pentium IV 3,0 Ghz and I suspect this is a bottleneck for the 7800 GS isn't it.

On the other hand I've tried the overclocking utility that comes with the nvidia driver, setting the GPU clock to 496 Mhz (default 350) and the memory clock to 1410 Mhz (default 1200 Mhz). In appearance all works normally and the games seem to be a little faster but I'm not sure what are the overclocking limits of my card...maybe another 7800 GS owner could tell me.

Finally, I've tried Gothic III on my computer, with the specs explained above, and was horribly slow, even setting the res. to 800x600 and all details to the lowest level. Is it normal?

Thank you all!

firstly welcome to the server
secondly please fill out your system specs

to answer your question yes the Gothic III thing is normal as it's a very high demanding game
also yes it probably is a bottleneck....now if u were to get a new e6600 setup or something then itd be less of a bottleneck but still a bottleneck

I'd say that P4 is the culprit

Yes...and maybe due to this bottleneck overclocking the card could be useless...

i have a system very similar to yours trevize. i don't have gothic 3 (and base on the reviews, probably won't get it unless they change things), but i do have oblivion. oblivion has a higher requirement than gothic 3, and i'm able to get on average 30+ outside & in doors/cave, 15+ in cities (4xAA, 8xAF, bloom). if what i'm getting with oblivion is your definition of slow, then it's hardware bottleneck. else, it maybe some other reason such as too many background software.

my suggestion is, turn off all unnecessary background software & try to oc your cpu, see if that improves things any

Well I don't use to keep my systray full of memory-eater stuff so that's not the problem here and anyway I think having background software open would affect HDD's efficiency much more than CPU load (though I'm not sure about this point).

Maybe the problem is the RAM. 2 Gb working at 320 Mhz (they should be working at 400 Mhz but unexpectedly when I upgraded from 1 to 2 Gb the clock got down and all dimms are exactly the same ).

the frequency drop of the memory will definately reduce your computer's performance. most likely the new ram you added runs at a default speed of 320MHz, thus reducing the speed of the entire system. try running the game without the new ram and see if the performance improves
