What exactly happened from 306.97 to the 310 series and up?

I've read a bit about how people say they won't budge from 306.97 because the subsequent driver releases introduces stuttering, and I very much noticed this in all my games, but never thought to roll back for some reason. Well finally went back to 306.97 and it's a huge change. The stutter is near gone. So I'm wondering, how could something like this slip beyond Nvidia's radar. A friend of mine doesn't notice the stutter and he was on the same drivers as me(314.07), so I'm wondering if this wasn't as widespread as I thought. But if anyone could share whatever they know on the subject, and if you think it'll ever be fixed in later driver updates that'd be appreciated.

You're noticing stutter on a single GPU? I'm running the 313.96 after spending a long time on the 306.96 and I haven't noticed any increased stuttering but that doesn't mean it's not there, just that I haven't noticed any..

Yea unfortunately so I was. Even when I was above 60 fps at all times. I've seen many times on this forum, people saying that the newest drivers(after 306.97) were the cause. Far Cry 3 was the absolute worst, and it feels so much better now that I'm back on 306.97.

I'm also in the same boat. Everything after 306.97 has stutter for me in BF3. Not sure what they changed but it certainly makes the drivers after 306 unusable for me....

The only major problem with NVIDIA driver so far from my experience, is 306.97, 310.54 and 310.61...for no reason my computer is restart automatically during gaming, don't think is my PSU though, because I have a Corsair HX650 Watt...before I upgraded to a new PSU (see my sig). 306.07 gave me a horrible screen tearing when I browsing on the net.

Other than that, I've not noticed any kind of problem, at all (until 314.07) WHQL.

I have this exact same issue but only in BF3; Any driver past 306.97 stutters when loading new areas with vsync on. If I roll back the issue is gone.
