Cheap and cheerful build for Girlfriend.

Thread Starter
Hi guys. I will keep this short and sweet.

I am upgrading from my 6850 and 24" 1080p monitor.

I am giving both to my girlfriend to get her build started, but it needs to be very low budget.

  • She wants to be able to play games like Sims, Gmod, DayZ, TF2.
  • I was thinking Pentium G860? If so, what mobo should I accompany with it?
  • She wont need much storage, so is it worth getting a 120GB SSD instead of HDD, or will other components bottleneck?
  • Last but not least, I'm guessing I will need about 450W PSU?

I guess a small rig would be nice, so perhaps Micro-ATX is the way forward (aslong as it doesn't significantly increase price)?

Your help is much appreciated gentleman.

Tom

I opted for these parts as opposed to the ones you suggested. It should be significantly more powerful and all for a relatively low price. I would like to point out that The Sims 3 is one of the most hardware intensive games I run, especially if you have a lot of the expansions.
PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant / Benchmarks

CPU: AMD FX-4300 3.8GHz Quad-Core Processor ($119.99 @ Newegg)
Motherboard: ASRock 970 Extreme3 ATX AM3+ Motherboard ($89.98 @ SuperBiiz)

Storage: OCZ Agility 4 128GB 2.5" Solid State Disk ($99.95 @ Mac Connection)
Case: Silverstone SST-RL01B-USB 3.0 (Black) ATX Mid Tower Case ($47.98 @ Newegg)

Many thanks for your response pal.

More than a parts list, I am looking for a discussion. That CPU is a little over my budget? Does it offer 2x the performance of the G860?

I don't really need a case, RAM or PSU specced as I don't mind waiting for a good deal, as there's no rush, and I already know what to get.

You're not going to be able to game very well with a G680. Look on eBay, there are used i5-2500Ks on their everyday for like $85 or occasionally less.

Then, you need to get a B75 motherboard. I'd recommend mITX to you for its small size.

I know you didn't ask for RAM and PSU, but I will include them anyways.

Here's the build: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/Ew98

Remember this includes RAM and PSU, and the CPU can be had used for $150 less.

I can't find a comparison between the FX-4300 and the G860. In this review, it seems that the 4300 floats around the i3 in terms of performance. In my experience it does have a fair amount of overclocking headroom.
the G860- is VERY under rated for light gaming should have almost NO problem in those games I've got a friend who runs most of those games on a old AM2 4800+ with a 4770 with little problems (most settings on low)

and the G860 give you about 2x as much "OMPH" as the 4800+ you will be fine.

An SSD should be fine for now and will really make the system Fly...if you NEED to add storage later you can.

that system really shouldnt pull more than about 300w

I'd personally go with something like this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817151072

on sale right now too $55 hard to beat

I recently built a rig for my girlfriend, did some case modding too, check it out, specs in my sig.
We went with an Intel G645..

http://www.overclock.net/t/1354365/project-pink-shinobi-ultimate-chick-rig/0_30

450W PSU should be decent for a cheaper build, but depends on what GPU you want to throw in there aswell.
