What they should do is just give me a bunch of 7970s so I dont buy a titan, yea I like that Idea. Do it AMD.

Why on earth do people expect the worlds fastest GPU to be value for money? Its totally illogical and not how the world works.

Sounds to me like a lot of people are complaining because they can't afford it. Afterall, just look at the car industry, TV's, even food/restaurants. If you want the best, you pay a PREMIUM for the PREMIUM product. You want a fast, stylish car? Go see how much a Ferrari, Lamborghini, or Pagani costs compared to other cars that aren't much slower. You want a top of the line 55" TV? You're looking at $3k+, you can get older model 55" Full HD displays for less than $800.....but they're not top of the line anymore. You want to buy an eye fillet steak? You pay significantly more for it than you do for rump steak.

I honestly don't get why people complain about the price of Titan. It is a SINGLE GPU card which looks to perform about 40% faster than a 7970GE in gaming PLUS we have no idea how huge its GPGPU performance numbers are. This is all coming in a single GPU package, with a 250w TDP (uses only ~20w more than the 7970GE) and will be the worlds fastest card for another year by the looks of it. How on earth can anyone possible complain about a premium product coming with a premium price? Its life people, get over it. The fact of the matter is that GK110 is an engineering marvel and rather than being bitter and snickering because you can't afford it, appreciate the absolutely amazing feat that Nvidia pulled off. After all, we all know GK110 was supposed to be the 680 and Nvidia could have put it into production if it made economical sense (which it didn't since GK104 i significantly cheaper to manufacture and had the performance).

Also something people are forgetting in this equation. "I want Titan to be $500 *cry*". Do you not realise how much more expensive a GK110 chip is to manufacture compared to GK104 or Tahiti XT? Have you seen the numbers and the die size etc? At $500, Nvidia would probably lose money on the GPU.

So seriously people, suck it up and appreciate Nvidia and Titan for what they have achieved using the SAME architecture as the GK104. How can anyone complain about a 40% performance increase on the same GPU architecture? Some of you people are ridiculous.

OT: From the brief look I took it basically seemed that they never really directly answered serious questions we want to know the answers too. Plus there wasn't really anything of value in that conference. Seems like AMD is feeling the heat and trying to justify their slow release schedule?

Now Titan releases with a 999$ price tag, a chip that's no different from what Nvidia used to release for half the price.

Indeed, the $100 range has been a bit more stagnant than hoped for. I don't see the high-end going up that much in price, though; the last three flagships from nVidia all released at $500 (480, 580, 680), and AMD only released the 7970 so high because nVidia didn't have anything to counter it. Also, the Titan is quite different from what they used to release, it seems to me at least: the big-die 580 only beat the small-die 6970 by ~10% IIRC, while the big-die Titan beats the small-die 7970GHz by ~35%+. They can afford to charge a ridiculous premium that they couldn't before due to GK110's performance, so they do.

EDIT:

Actually, we have a good idea about its GPGPU; look at the K20 and K20X Teslas. Going off memory the K20X is around 30-40% faster than the 7970GHz in DP, around 20% faster in SP, so the Titan should be a bit below that.

The premium is too steep.

my opinion of this whole fiasco (you probably won't like it) Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
It's asking almost twice as much as the current top end GPU offerings and not offering the same performance which is insane! Remember the days when the 5870 offered performance almost equal to 2 HD4870s for $380? How about the 7970 which offers almost twice the performance of a 6970 for ~450 (was 550 i know) heck even the 8800 GTS was an extremely powerful GPU for a good price when it launched.

Why is it that this thing should cost $900-$1000 doing what GPUs have been doing for many years and why are people so okay with it? Reminds me of the GTX8800 Ultra days and that card got the appropriate negative response from consumers for its insane price hike.

It's been more than a year since the 7970 launched so getting 40-60% more performance really isn't anything amazing it's been done before, But whatever, If you want to set a precedent that this sort of pricing is okay and that AMD and Nvidia shouldn't care at all about offering consumers at least decent value then throw your money at the titan. Just don't be mad if you see gimped flagship GPUs in the future with their true potential locked away for another steep priced premium product.

well you were warned... redface.gif

Here's a thought.

If you think Titan is too expensive, stop whining and don't buy it. Plenty of others will buy it and be happy.

Having seen the transcript from this teleconference, my faith in Amd is quite shaken. The amount of stumbling over words when people were asking questions made them look bush league. Some of the comments were also outlandish as well. 7970ghz sold out on newegg when the game bundle came out? Really? LOL. That was the same time I started research on what 7970ghz I wanted. It was never sold out. You'd see a few instances where one brand was sold out but plenty of others in stock.

I didn't realize that taking childish veiled shots at the competition and telling fibs were what a teleconference consisted of.

You see the samething with every generation change, a jump from one generations mid highend to the the next generation will cost you 400$ but the performance increase won't be double, not even 150% in most cases. Any GPU upgrade unless it's twice the performance can be seen as uneconomic:

GPU performance index at 100
GPU x Performance 100 cost 400$ GPU y performance 130 cost 400$ and so forth.

I have to say it's disappointing to see amd taking a step back here with development. I am no fan boy of either GPU company, just price for performance. Hopefully both companies next gen GPUs will be out early q4.

Maybe AMD will announce a 7970 2ghz edition with built in Peltier cooler! Seriously I do wonder how far they really could push clockspeed if they wanted to go that route.

I see your point but this titan is estimated to cost 1K... while offering the same performance you were talking about in your post. It looks like the titan will offer the same perfomance jump you get going from a 6950 to a 7950 for $1000 but that's not what i have a problem with.

My issue is the timing more than the price. If the titan was released 2-3 months after the GTX680 launched it could have justified it's premium much more than it does launching almost a year after and delivering the performance you could reasonable expect from a GTX780 (give or take 10%) while costing way more than a GTX780 would.

But the titan isn't released yet so we shall see. I'm basing my predictions off the charts we saw come out yesterday (which could very well turn out to be fake and the titan could actually kick some major ass.

Sadly people get the misconception that i am against enthusiast hardware because of this opinion when i have no problem with the GTX690 and 7990. they cost about twice as much as Nvidia/AMD flagship single GPUs while performing close to twice as well (when scaling works) and they release with in afew months of the flagship launch
