A privilege we pay from our hard earned wage for...

Of course, when EA decides to shut the servers down, feel free to thank the people that allow you to continue playing the game.

While UO itself has simply aged, there are still tons of DLC content which people actively subscribe for.

And EA didn't allow those free servers for UO either...they just didn't set themselves up to be able to fight them as well as Blizzard did. BF3 was made from the beginning to be locked down so i know they will fight this to the end. Their DLC are nothing compared to what an actual modding community would do with the game so they wouldn't stand a chance if they just let this go.

Heh, I should look into trying to actually run a UO shard. I had some great fun on free servers in the day...I remember one that allowed you to become a vampire...bonuses in the night...penalties in the day and you also had to keep stocked on blood from animals. I had a lot fun for a while, but in the end you don't play a MMO for the game...you play them for the people and a free server was hopping if there was even 50 players on it.

It is not much of a Privilege if we continue to pay these guys when they only develop games at a half measure. In a since none of us should have to mod games, but I am not saying they should be perfect either.

If you are going to dump 100 mil in to make a game and then charge us for that game make sure you are doing it RIGHT.

It's fine to have expectations, but these features aren't your right. Gaming is a privilege that's provided to us by developers and publishers. Without them, we wouldn't have any games to play unless you were to develop them yourself. If you don't want to do that, then let them do their job and if you don't like what they do, don't support them by buying their product.

Probably won't be for a long time as long as enough people are playing the game. If that's the case, it is their right to do so and I will move on to something else. If they do it under questionable circumstances, I simply won't support them anymore.

This is exciting!

IMHO it isn't piracy if the users bought the game. EA isn't selling server software.
I think what people are getting at with the piracy thing is that sometimes things like this allow people who pirated the game to play on unofficial servers. AlterIWnet, while giving users the ability to host their own servers, also opened up the ability for exactly that.

This is good news! I miss the days of modded servers. Growing up playing CS has instilled the notion that all online games should have a moddable server counterpart. Be it alongside the official ones or not.
