BM THINKPAD T42P, S-IPS , Worthy?

Thread Starter
Hey guys, I'm being offered a bit oldish notebook in a near new condition, with the following parameters:

IBM THINKPAD T42P
Intel Pentium M 2.10GHz, 765, Dothan, FSB: 400MHz, 2MB L2
15.1" (4:3) 1600 x 1200 S-IPS
ATI FireGL Mobility FireGL T2, 128MB, 128-bit, DX9, SM 2.0
1024MB DDR
80GB PATA
DVDRW
Wi-Fi, IR, LAN, Modem

My question is, is it worth it? Is it solid build or it is cheap thing? What are the HDD's specs and how much memory slots do I have, 1 or 2? How much memory maximum I can install ? I will be using it for multimedia, playing full hd videos and stuff on Windows 7 32bit OS. A little bit of explanation and personal views shared would be great. Thanks.thumb.gif

It all depends on price but don't expect to run Hi-def video smoothly, I would recommend installing Win Xp since it isn't resource hungry like the Win7 if you HAVE to have Windows if not then install Linux.
Definitely wouldn't expect it to play any Hi-Def content. What price are you looking at?

$260. Are you sure about the HD content? I didn't find any reviews or anything.

I don't think I would spend $260 on that machine. You should save up a little more and get an AMD APU based laptop. Or get a refurb that is slightly older but still much faster than the machine in your post: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=4985108&CatId=4936

If you can save up a little more though you could get something like this: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=4977874&CatId=4935 that would definitely be faster than the Lenovo for $260.

I'd never consider it at that price. Maybe $75-100 if you really needed a cheap laptop. The cpu is over 8 years old ! (and incredibly slow). We have a 1.6 Pentium M Dell lab laptop at work that I pretty much only use as a terminal output screen when actually out in the lab. Pretty much anything can ping the CPU usage at 100% indefinitely

That is an insane price for a pentium M,
Check ebay and you will find that that is the going price for a core 2 duo thinkpad T60 and above.

To put it in perspective...on the CPU and GPU alone an N450 Atom IIRC is 1.5 to 2x as capable. Would you pay more than 250 for something weaker than an Atom?
