My old DDR3 vs. new DDR3, any difference?

Thread Starter
Hi guys, I've had the same 4x 2GB ddr3 1333 Corsair Dominators (green AMD Edition) RAM since Oct. 2009. Its been Oc'd to 1600 @ CAS 8 - 1t (unganged) since, across 3 motherboards, now residing in my hopefully long lasting Sabertooth 990fx with my 1100t @ 4.1ghz. I see people getting really good MaxMem2 scores at +15,000 MB/s read and writes on their memory, and my ddr3 is barely breaking 10,000.

I've got a 100% stable, and pretty decently Oc'd machine all the way across. CPU, NB, RAM, and GPU all 24/7 stable with decent increases. Wondering if my RAM is just slow from being an old generation, or if it's just AMD and their CPUs and chipsets?

Is new RAM gonna make a real world noticeable difference?

What would be some REALLY good RAM to get 1600+ @ CAS 8 at LEAST, with 8 - 16GB of RAM, using all 4 dimm slots.

Difference in what? In gaming I'm almost positive a faster RAM won't do anything much, if it does at all.
If you really want an upgrade, suggestions :

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820233252 - CL7 Quad channel kit, will be my first pick if you want all 4 ram slots taken if I understood correctly. Only 20$ more expensive than the equivalent dual channel kit. CL7 @ 1600 MHz.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820233239 - Same as above one as it seems in all specs, except for its large heat spreaders.

Thanks for some suggestions. I like those Dominator Platinums, expensive tho. smile.gif Does an 1100t support higher then 1600 out the box, or is it Bulldozer when 1866 was supported by AMD? Wonder fi those Dominators would Oc to 1866 equivalent speed under 1600 divider? thinking.gif

Judging by that MaxxMEM screenshot, I'm guessing your base clock is around 242 MHz (x17 CPU multi and x6.66 RAM multi). If you can get that base clock up to 250 MHz, you can run your RAM at 2000MHz with an x8 multi or a little over 1900MHz if you maintain your 242 MHz base clock. Thubans can't really clock RAM much higher than 2000MHz anyway (the fastest I've seen was Slappa's Mushkin Ridgebacks at 2240MHz, and that was with dry ice, I believe).

So, I guess, if you really wanted to, you could get yourself a nice kit of 2133MHz RAM that you could run at or below 2000MHz. It's definitely preferable to run 2 sticks instead of 4 -- 4 sticks are harder on the IMC than 2. Just beware of compatibility issues. A lot of high-end RAM sticks on the market these days are geared toward Ivy Bridge systems since those CPU's have far superior IMC's that can clock RAM much faster than Thubans can. You definitely won't be able to get the most out of sticks with Samsung HCH9 or Hynix CFR IC's, so don't even bother forking over the cash for those.

Your best bet is probably some mid-tier memory like the G.Skill Sniper, Ripjaws X, or Ares series and Corsair Vengeance series if you want a new set of memory. In all honesty, though, if all you do is game on your PC, you shouldn't even bother getting new memory. You won't see much of a real-world difference, if any. You're better off saving up for a newer CPU, like an FX 8350, that can drop into your Sabertooth mobo and actually clock RAM past 2200MHz.

I'll recommend you the G.Skill Trident X 2400MHx 2x4GB (8GB) kit, It will future proof you when you upgrade...... I'm running them at 1652MHz @ 7-7-8-18-20 1T @ 1.55V Highest Iv'e gone with it is 1701MHz, but can't keep it entirely stable because my CPU has a shoddy IMC, you might get lucky though!

You will be better off to go with 2x8gb set if you want to go higher the 1700. Most Phenom II x6 stops around 1700-1800 with 4 sticks.

Good suggestions. I use my rig all around. I was just wondering too if mebbe my maxmem scores are too low? Maybe because of the age of this kit? I cant get this RAM any higher then 802Mhz, at 8-8-8-24-34-1t at 1.75v. Its stock 1333 at CAS 7 1.5v. Its done really good, and Im definatly not bored with it, it matches my mobo decently, and has been Oc'd decent for years, running like a champ.

You guys all pretty much say faster speed / new RAM won't really make much of a difference, so I'll just hold on to them. I'll contemplate new RAM for sure if i upgrade to a new CPU sometime, but this 1100t at 4.1 is doing a GREAT job for all my needs. A new build would probably be Intel anyways.

You are correct too. 242 x 17 for 4.1ghz, at a 1333 divider to get just over 1600 spec, DRAM freq. is 806mhz, I said 802 in last post, my bad. CPU-Z reports divider at a 3:10 ratio, the BIOs just says 1333. thumb.gif

I just BSOD on 900mhz with 1.8v, but got it to boot at 833mhz, ran maxmem, got mebbe 90 more points on each each score. So, im just gonna keep this RAM, Ive alrdy had it forever, and it runs ddr3 1600 fine at a decent Cas latency, for AMD anyway, its doing awesome. Thanks guys! Ill keep those suggestions in mind for future upgrade / new system builds.
