680 to a 7970 ghz 680 4gb?

Thread Starter
hi, i currently have a gtx 680 one of the first out..

about 6 months ago i bought a koreon Matrix 27" 2560 x 1440 Moniter. i used to get well over 60 fps on Battlefield 3 now hover around 50 maybe but lows in high 20's at times.

i have 2 questions i guess..

1) if i was to switch cards should i go with a 7970 GHZ edition or a 680 4gb?
2) am i crazy for even thinking about this?

Thank you and please be honest...

That card should get you decent frames even at that resolution. It could be that your cpu is bottlenecking and might wanna overclock it to ~4Ghz.

Oveclock you CPU and buy another one in sli if you are not happy after OC.
The difference would be minimal if you changed between 680 and 7970 and even smaller with 680 and 680 4gb...

Dont use AA at 1440p with a single card.

ok just to go over this

i have an i-7 970 stock 3.2 Mhz overclocked to 3.8 MHZ
i'm getting on average (cause i checked again) 45-56 fps but lows in the 20's
another thing at 2560 x 1440 even thought i have my setting on full screen i get windowed mode no matter what << any help there would be nice

i read somewhere on these forums a while back that my resolution may require more memory on my card. is this true?

also again the windowed mode does affect gameplay , sometimes i have to click multiple time for any kind of response..

i actually figured it out why my screen was always in windowed mode..

for anyone haveing this trouble .. if you have teamviewer installed and running on your pc exit it out...

It may really be your cpu tha may be bottlenecking your GPU. You must try and get it to 4.0-4.5Ghz to ensure that your GPU is able to max out. Your 680 shoul not have problems running that game at that res.

get msi afterburner so you can check cpu vs gpu usage while playing BF3.
if gpu usage is less than 90%, you're cpu is a bottleneck

You won't get extra performance by going from 2 gb to 4gb if you aren't toppling your VRAM while gaming. If you are, maybe turn down the settings a bit and live with it. In my opinion you're burning cash by paying to get a card with roughly the same performance just for the extra VRAM.
