Install tips for Linux Mint with SSD

Just picked up an OCZ 60Gb Vertex Plus R2 SSD to replace a dead hard drive in my laptop. I know linux (mint or ubuntu) work just fine with SSD's but is there anything I need to do specific to linux to make sure I get the most out of my SSD? I know how to optamize windows for SSD's but don't know much about linux. Thanks guys.


EDIT: ubuntu it is, Linux Mint crash's before I can select to install or load the bootable OS.

The install of Ubuntu went smooth as butter. VERY snappy little machine with this SSD.

Well I tried to turn on TRIM via the askubuntu.com instructions but according to there method of checking its not working.

Any ideas?

Ok. Most of the conversation in the first link was a little above my head, but with the help of google I was able to muster though it. Everything seems fine according to Kramy.

Here is the output you requested:

Timing buffered disk reads: 398 MB in 3.00 seconds = 132.46 MB/sec

Mind you, even though this is a fast SSD, this laptop is only supports Sata1.. Its and Old Centrino Duo from the XP day's.


EDIT: according to the link in your Edit TRIM is not working. Identical output both times.

I really wish I knew how to make a script to do that for you because I know how difficult it is not to mess up a series of meaningless numbers.

PS: what does your fstab file look like?

Ok, I figured out what the problem with mint was. Seem's the Install Disk I made a fail. I made another and it installed just fine so now I get my Mint-Cinnamon wink.gif

He should/might be in this thread at some point lol.

I'll run down through your links again to see if PEBKAC is an issue.. Very possible with me vs linux lol.

Can you elaborate what you want to know about the fstab file? please be sure to speak slow or you might lose me.. New to linux and all frown.gif

Hmm...so OCZ says there's no way to test on TRIM? I won't say they're wrong but that's the first I've ever heard that. I don't know what to tell you. My drive after doing the TRIM test reads out either FFs or 00s every time. Of course...not to scare you out or anything...but a few years ago (like 2011) some Linux kernel maintainers (IIRC) thought that enabling TRIM was a bad idea and could hurt the drive.

As for the fstab...it's a file that you can edit to add mount points, and drives, and change the settings of the drive. It should be located at /etc/fstab. You can either "cat /etc/fstab" and paste the output here or try to view it with a GUI text editor. Either way I just want to make sure discard is in the right place. Also...there may be some chipset (mobo) issues. It's just a hunch but I've seen that a lot of old mobos seem to really have problems with some SSDs. For instance Crucial's reputation destroying V4s seem to hate the very mobos/computers they were supposed to be designed for.

OCZ implied that each and every SSD will handle a TRIM or GC command from an OS differently based on design(?)... No clue if this is right or wrong. SSD's are semi new to me... same with linux so I'm out of my area of comfort lol.
