I'm thinking of replacing my i7 920 to fx 8350 vishera... - Page 6

Personally I think the upgrade would be noticeable but not worth the cost. Wait for Haswell/Steamroller.

I would only recommend the FX-8350 if you alrrady have a compatible motherboard which in this case you don't. Vishera isn't bad but it is not quite an i5-3570K. I'd recommend the 3570K and the board in my sig rig.

So depends on if the OP bought crossfire 7950's to play shogun, or games like crysis. lmaoi

So pulling out one game that is not even out yet is not cherry picking? Shogun 2 is quite new and very hardware intensive. Also like it has been said many times here the 920 has more OC potential then the 8350. The 920 maxes out at little over 50% OC while the 8350 tops out at about 33% OC. So when both are running at there full potential the 920 is closer to the 8350 then when at stock.

Further more when talking about CPU performance there are wild fluctuations based on platform. There has even been recorded instances where a 920 4.0GHz has out preformed a 3770k running at 5.0.GHz and there has been instances where a old q6600 @ 3.0Ghz comes out ahead of a 920 4.0GHz. Thees odd ball results mean that you can never ever look just at one benchmark and say ooh look CPU X is so much better then CPU Y.

Its also worth notating that in that benchmark they run a GTX 690. I can say for sure but its possible that a PCI-Express 2.0 x16 is no longer enough to handle a dual GPU card of that caliber. Remember that PCI-E 3.0 is twice as fast as the old port. Before you jump the gun about the two 7950 remember that they are both using there own PCI-Express 2.0 x16 so they have the same amount of bandwidth available as the GTX690 on a single PCI-E 3.0 slot.

Raptorpowa appears to be running a pair of HD 7950s @ 1080p. You'll have no problem playing almost every game on the market, and most likely future titles.Upgrading the CPU will most likely produce little gains in performance, or at least gains that will go unnoticed. I see no reason to upgrade ATM. If you really want to upgrade consider going for a multi monitor, high resolution setup. Maybe even a 120Hz monitor. Now that'll change things for you.

You are the only person in this thread trying vigorously get TC to spend money on the 8350.

If he were building a new pc, I would easily recommend the 8350 (~200 budget) or 3770k (300 budget), but hes not. He already has a i7 920 at 4.0ghz stable.

There is no way buying a 8350 + a decent board is a worthy upgrade for the price that he is shelling out. That is the point everyone is trying to point out, no one (sane) is saying the 8350 is worse than the 920.

He has crossfire 7950 you really think hes not trying to play games like these?

If he was only trying to play games like shogun or starcraft I would side with you. but hes obviously not.

Also, games will now be coded on AMD 8 core CPU's so its a safe bet more games coming out this year and so on will be better suited on the 8350.

Lol wut? Crysis 3 was released two days ago...... Jesus Christ does anyone read anymore?

Been proven that there is almost no difference between PCIE 3 and PCIE 2

Proof please of the rest.....I would love to see a 5GHz 920 beating a 5GHz 3770k . lachen.gif

There is no guarantee that future games will be coded to make better use of AMD chips. Some will some won't. Also the argument about types of game is a moot point. Its not the type of game that dictates how it preforms. Its the engine and assets. Some RTS game might run like crysis 3 and some shooters might run like Shogun 2. Even when talking about games that use the same engine there is still a very wide range of the CPU/GPU load balance. Put lots of high quality shaders and dynamic light in your game and it will murder every GPU it comes across. Put a crap ton of characters, AI and physics in your game and it will put the wind out of even the most power full CPU's.

^Fixed that for you

Well I don't remember where I saw that bench so let me show you this instead.

Don't miss understand me. I'm not making any stupid claims that a 920 is better then a 3770k (or in this instance a 2600k) but rather that some times there are results that don't reflect the relative power of the CPU's. In game CPU benchmarks this happens more often then people realize. This is why you need a large sample size preferably with both amd and nivida cards tested as well as down clocking tests as a reference.

So you throw in crysis 3 and that makes a good enough reason for upgrade? Haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!

I have the i7920 and want to upgrade as well - but me, I'm gonna see what haswell brings! Then its more for a electric bill thingy and lower temps!

The i7920 maybe coming a dinosaur, but its no way nearly extinct thumb.gif
