I decided to make a new thread for this since the old one is full of old stuff, and we can discuss the pros and cons, along with potentials of this new, finished design.

Main goal of mod: Prevent dust from entering through the top exhaust fans when the fans are OFF.
The easy way to do this would be just to slap on a few filters, but those block a lot of airflow, and some dust still gets in. This blocks 100% when the fans are off, or on (since air flow will push dust out and away).

Ease of construction: Materials used are thin black plastic sheeting and vynal/rubber hindge with adhesive. This sounds great right? Where can get these easily? HERE! :)That's right. It will cost you somewhere around 5 bucks. I got the plastic for a dollar, and had the tape hangin around my place.

Here is how to make it. Print This out at 100% scale on an 8.5x11 paper. Should match up perfect.

Then, staple it over 4 squares of plastic, each about 4x4 inches. DRILL the holds out first for the fan mount, the cut the small square holes out of the fan "base" where the hinges go. THEN cut the shapes out. You should get a set of flaps and a set of bases. The "center" piece is obviously for the middle, and you only need one. so don/t bother with stapling that one over the 4 sheets of plastic.

Then, fold the "base" where is shown in the lower photos. The angle should be around 30 degrees on the inside. I ran a lighter on the edge for a split second to slightly melt and "lock" the bent corners so they would stay in place. All you need to do then is cut some small hinges out and put it all together! Here are some finished photos:

Closed: "off"

Open: "on"

Appearance: Sure, this mod may be made with better materials, and of course, with more precision, it would look better. This is the FIRST version of this. So I will try to make some better, cleaner looking ones later. I would also LOVE it if all of you out there could make some too, since it's ridiculously easy to make. Here is the video of how it looks. Note: The flaps kind of jump around initially because the fan is at low power for a moment when I turn the computer on, THEN it goes into full blast. Also, some of them kindof wobble because the angle of the bracket is too large, and needs to be no larger than 30 degrees, otherwise the win kinda makes the flaps jump around.

Please let me know what your thoughts are. And go ahead and make your own if you like!

First of all: BEAUTIFUL. drool.gif

Quick question however, as I don't want to assume. Since you're talking about the top, this is the pull side of a radiator, correct?

Do you know how this will effect air volume or flow rates for your radiator and fans as a cooling unit?

I have a slipcover that sits over my entire rig down to the table top when it's off, but this is brilliant for people with either very large rigs or that just want to show off all the time!

Thanks! - thumb.gif

This is a pretty cool concept! How does it affect the sound of it, I'm not sure if the video is making it sound louder...quieter or changes it in anyway
