In the market for 1x PCIe Card.. Help?

Thread Starter
so im toying with the idea of using my 2p server as htpc for a while, only has 8x slot so naturally im in the market for a 1x card have never looked at these the egg has 3, and the most well known vendor is HIS.. im not expecting anything amazing but what you think? anyone had any experiance?

also,
of course i can search newegg so i dont need anyone linking the newegg page,
no it is not an open ended slot,
no cutting the slot is not an option

thanks
no need to cut the slot,
you could always use a pci-e riser and stick any gpu you want in there

which of those allows me to mount it in a standard case?

I know of riser, I have used em before, just can't put it into a standard case.
by standard, do you mean a micro atx tower like these? http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&DEPA=0&Order=BESTMATCH&N=-1&isNodeId=1&Description=micro+atx+case&x=0&y=0

you can just put the gpu about 2 slots below the motherboard pci-e, that will give the riser some room
and you can screw the gpu plate to the back of the case

anyway what motherboard are you using? maybe it has pci slot and you can use that instead of pciex1

GT610 or HD5450 pci cards

doh, i didnt realize you were actually gonna use a server board.

on second thought, I think the pci bus maybe too slow for 1080p even though your opteron can easily play it.
I have a spare geforce fx5200 pci card here, let me test and see if it stutters when playing 1080p.
i'll be back later, i need to remove it from my pentium 4 first

-edit 720p is laggy, and 1080p takes a long time just to start playing and it stutters biggrin.gif
even if you get an HD5450, i dont think the pci bus bandwidth is enough.

pci-e x1 is also the same bandwidth so better go for a riser and use your pci-e x8 slot

realized to much work.. building mitx hyperthread dual core i3 htpc instead.

lol ok then.
you could go cheaper with a pentium G620 for an htpc, mine plays 1080p fine

no ht.. I'm a cruncher :-)

ie, why my nas has 16 cores. I was gonna get 3770s for htpc but I wanted to make it really really small as the node 304 is still just a little big for me

cheers :-)
