3770K load temp ramps after ~10mins

Thread Starter
Hi all,

I've been messing about trying to OC my 3770K, BIOS settings don't seem as sensible as my old Q8400, but that's another story. tongue.gif

Running at 3.8Ghz - 95 x 40; not sure about the difference between this and 100 x 38.

Ran Prime95 for 15 mins or so, temps bouncing around between 60 and 70C, when it suddenly starts to ramp up, and keeps climbing. I killed P95 when it got to 80C.
Monitoring temps in speedfan:

Anyone have any Idea why this is happening? is it to do with the long duration power limit in the BIOS? Thermal throttling is ON.

Hope someone can shed some light on this.
Cheers.

Specs:

i7 3770K @ 3.8 (95 x 40)
ASRock z75 Pro3 Mobo
Arctic Cooling Freezer Pro 7 rev 2

and other stuff. (sig?)

Cheers for the reply, but I've seen these. Reconfigured BIOS afresh, stessing as we speak. I'm not rich enough atm to risk delidding, despite knowing that it'll probably be perfectly fine. biggrin.gif

Could it perhaps be the cooler reaching it's temp limit? liquid in the heat-pipes boiling or something?

Temps, heading for 90, gonna kill it...
Cheers.

Well, I didn't kill it, and it seems to fluctuate from 65-75 to 80-90 in about 5 minute intervals, HWiNFO64 doesn't detect any change in the clock speed...
It's a bit hotter than I'd like; might look into watercooling tongue.gif

You might just have a chip with very very bad tim. If I were you I'd mount the stock cooler and see what kind of temps it would get with the stock cooler under stock settings. if it hits 105°C then RMA it.
Before that you should try remounting your current cooler though. AFAIK the liquid in the heat pipes is pretty much always boiling. That is why they transfer heat so efficiently.

Really? I should mention that the 90C temps were at 4Ghz, but still...
Yeah, If I can live without it for a bit that might be the way to go.

Yeah, you're right; heat transfer through phase change. neat.

prime runs different tests every 15 minutes, perhaps the first test it runs is large FFT(more stressful on memory controller) and the second test is small FFT which is more stressful on the cores themselves resulting in higher temperatures.
