I'd hope that they'd be smart and at least let people have a little bit of credit towards PS4 PSN purchases. I don't think any one can expect full credit since if they plug in their PS3 they will still have all the old purchases as well.

Otherwise I think the backlash from the general PSN community is going to be pretty big...even if they keep the console around for another six years I don't see many people being comfortable buying anything.

Then again, the PS3 kind of stopped all the backward compatibility to the PS1 so this has already become common place anyway...to my knowledge there was only one version that any good at it (the one that came with a 60GB HDD) and one that was bad at it (the 80GB version) and all the rest would not play a PS1 game. No one really seemed to care. So maybe the general customer of the PS4 won't care about PSN purchases they made four years ago either.

I'm fairly certain all PS3's play PS1 games.

Whoops I had my PS1 and PS2 mixed up there

But is was the lack of backward compatibility that prevented me from buying a PS3...mainly because there were not a lot of PS3 games that interested me, but there are tons of PS2 games that I really enjoy and I get to play them via an emulator. However, seeing as how so many people bought PS3's even with no support of PS2 games I don't know if many people cared. Most of the same people will probably not care about PSN purchases either...no way to know until Sony drops the bomb

Will the PS4 limit the functionality of pre-owned games?

It looked yesterday as if the answer was a resolute “no”. Then this morning that had softened into a “hmm, no, probably not”. Now that seems to have become a hugely indistinct “who knows?”.

GameSpot asked Sony Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida in a quickfire Q&A not if PS4 would block used games but whether second hand games will require an activation code on the console.

His answer: “It's a publisher decision. We are not talking about it. Sorry.”

lol.

You know it's a publisher decision on PS3 right?
Some allow and some charge you a pass...
I don't see how Sony is to blame in this, don't support the publisher if they do something you don't like!

aka meaning every publisher will do it..

I feel like Console people will get over it though.. PC users don't complain.. Maybe there will be more sales on the ps4/live market like Steam has going.

I think the reason PC gamers don't complain so much is because of the steep discounts we get. Publishers better be prepared to do the same thing with consoles or people will complain.

I think its possible to get steep discounts on console games. PSN+ already gives its users TONS of FREE games.

That and the fact that PSN has some games that are half the price of the Steam variant. Blade Kitten being one example off of the top of my head.
