PS1 and PS2 games look like crap on LCD's, you need a Tube TV or a CRT Rear Projection TV for a good picture on ether of those consoles.

If it wasnt for the component cables for the Wii, that consoles as well would suck for LCDs.


Really no law says you need backwards compatibility, this is a new console. May carry the Playstation name but everything hardware and software wise is different. think of it as a entirely new console that happens to log in with the same PSN ID.

Same reason why making a game for iOS isn't the same as an Android game. Those digital games need to be translated/emulated by the new system, they won't run natively. That translation/emulation is expensive and would up costs on the console, they did that last generation and it wasn't well received, so they're not doing it again. Whether the game is on disc or digital is irrelevant to needing an emulator.

Native backwards compatibility was also completely under utilized by consumers on PS3.

But you don't use your iOS account on your Android phone. That's the crux of the matter here. It's like if Steam had required you to rebuy games on Mac, or Linux, there'd be uproar.

You mean like the majority of the Steam library that doesn't work on anything but Windows?

When those games were purchased, they were purchased for the PS3. There was no assurances and only uninformed assumptions that they'd be functional on PS4. Like I said, it is fully possible for them to make them work on PS4, but you'll be paying more for the base console to get that function, and the majority of customers would rather pay less than pay for a feature they're unlikely to use.

Because those games haven't been ported to Linux, and the ones that have don't come at any extra cost if you already have them.

And who needs emulation on the console? (which is software and not hardware, so why would this increase the cost of the console?) They could either port the game, or make software emulation. And we're talking about PSN games, here, which are mostly PS2-era games or Crossplay PSP games.

Yes, actually, as that means that they can then SELL that same content on the PS4 network. It's a bit absurd that they didn't build in emulation to allow you to run PS3 stuff, but it is Sony.

So your opposition is on the stance that if they're re-released onto PS4's PSN they're likely to require being bought again? So you've assumed they'll be ported again, and you've assumed they'll not be regranted, and in making those assumptions you've skipped a line of the original article?

Porting and/or creating an emulator isn't cheap. When you buy a console you're not only paying for the hardware, there was a cost to develop the software on it too, and increasing that cost increases the cost of the console. A game that is available on PS3 and PSP is the same as a game available on the PS3 and 360, when they're making it it's a conscious choice and they have to actively do both things. PS3 vs PS4 is a bigger change than PS3 vs 360.
