You mean I wasn't able to play PS1 games on my PS2? News to me... rolleyes.gif

I don't know, could you? I honestly don't remember. {goes to check} OH, I guess you could...sorry for the mis-info, but it's been years since I owned a PS1 game, so I guess I just forgot. My point still stands thought...

I really don't get why so many people care so much about this.

Sure, it's an annoyance, but when you buy a PS4, are you immediately going to get rid of your PS3? Why not just play the PS3/PSN games on the PS3 still? It's not like Sony is going to immediately shut down all PSN servers related to all PS3 online content. For God's sake, they only barely stopped manufacturing the PS2!

Historically, home consoles have not been backwards compatible. None of Sega's were, none of Nintendo's were until the Wii, and none of the other lesser-known ones were.

If changing consoles over to x86 (PC) architecture means that they will never be able to play any previous games, then I am more than happy to make that sacrifice. Moving to PC architecture is a MASSIVE step in the right direction for the entire video game market as a whole. thumb.gif

i strongly disagree. If you can buy a bunch of games on steam on a Intel/NVIDIA PC and then switch to AMD/AMD and still be able to run all those games regardless of the fact that its two completely different architectures, then why cant SONY do the same with PS3 and PS4? Many classic PS2 games got PS3 versions so without a doubt its possible with next gen consoles too. Some people invested hundreds of dollars on PSN and PS3 content so it would be a shame to lose all that if their PS3 died and they had a PS4.

Where did you get the idea that AMD and Intel use different architectures?

The equivalent would be buying an app on your Android table and expecting to play it on your Windows PC.

That's not even close to the same thing. It would be, if you tried to run an Nvidia card with ATI drivers, or installed an AMD CPU into an Intel motherboard.

The PS3 and PS4 are completely different architectures, down to the very core. The entire game engine of each individual game would pretty much have to be re-programmed from the ground up (which is what they did for the God of War collection, and others).

It would be like if someone from Djibouti ran up to you, speaking frantically in their native tongue. Clearly you would know they wanted you to do something, but you would have absolutely no idea what it was, or how to get it done.

Developers come first, customers come second. If all those games that people had for PS3 PSN where for free in PS4 PSN developers would not like that.

Difference of PC games being designed with that in mind and leaving code at higher level languages while a single hardware configuration allows console games to be broken down to assembly for performance. It's the reason a PC with perfectly identical specs to a console is inferior to the console for a straight console port. Beyond that, AMD and Intel both use the same instruction code, it's just handled differently. Dialect vs language.

no matter how many current gen games i play, i always find myself back to the classics at some point, re-living them and getting a rush off the nostalgia. i wish there were more PS1 inclusions on the PSN, theres a heap of games missing from the catalogue. it sucks i wont be able to transfer my existing purchases when i inevitably get a PS4. just means keeping my PS3 though.

I think you completely missed my point. I know the graphics are no worse when using a BC newer system than they were on the original system (like I said, even though the graphics suck, I still love some of the old games), my point was, (which you seemed to agree with in your last sentence) just because the PS4 doesn't have BC, it shouldn't be an issue. All it means is you would have to hold on to your PS3 if you wanted to continue to play those games; the only people who really seem to be complaining are those who are dead set on getting rid of their PS3 when they get the PS4.

I was just saying, if you are wanting to play your PS3 games that bad, keep the PS3 and quit complaining. They are two different archetectures, so complaining about it is like always owning a Windows PC, then buying a Mac and complaining that your PC software doesn't work on the Mac. You made the decision to buy the new hardware (and not keep the old), so it's your fault you can't run the software, not the company who made the hardware. I mean, did people complain when Nintendo moved from the NES to the SNES and the SNES didn't play NES games? No, we kept our NES and played NES game on it and played SNES games on the SNES. Why is this such a big deal for people?
