Hey guys. I'm having fun with my "polish the turd" project involving an old Nforce2 motherboard and an Athlon XP 2500+. Yeah, I know its worthless hardware, but I'm enjoying seeing if I can massage it enough to make it viable for a school PC for my nine year old nephew.

The motherboard doesn't have SATA 1.5 like many of the nForce2 motherboards did and I'd like to add a couple SATA devices to it (HD and DVD drive). I was wondering how much CPU utilization I can expect just using a cheap PCI controller card in a non-RAID situation (such as this one). If I'm not using software RAID will just hooking up a single HD use many/any CPU resources? I also have an old Audigy 2 PCI sound card installed. Will hooking up an SATA hard drive to the PCI bus screw up its performance?
