Have they mentioned 3D gaming and movies on PS4 at all? I assume there will be none?

On your monitor sure, I'd love to have a 4k monitor for photo editing, but I am talking about 4k television. No one can see the pixels on their tv unless they are sitting far to close.

I am very skeptical that on a 45--64 inch screen at a reasonable distance from the screen, that anyone would be able to accurately guess the difference.

You don't need to be able to see the individual RGB sub structure of a pixel to "see the pixel". Any form of aliasing is caused by your seeing the difference between individual pixels.

I'm convinced that people only say they can't tell the difference because they either don't know or don't care. Just like the tests where people say that MP3 sounds better than a lossless audio format, it's considered "good" only because that's what they're used to. Many people don't even know what jaggies are, they just look at the screen and whatever they see is what they consider normal.

In desktop use my eyes (theoretically) aren't actually maxxed out until I'm looking at an image at over 600 DPI from 3' away, my 15" laptop should be running 8Kx4K in order to present an image no different from looking at a real life object. It only takes 300 DPI from 3' to significantly reduce jaggies, however, so 4Kx2K is a good compromise.
Going by those numbers, with a 60" 4K screen someone with good eyes would need to sit at least 12' away to get the same effect, that's the same distance that I like to sit at watching stuff on a 107" projector screen, people with worse eyes would have the advantage of being able to sit closer without seeing jaggies (I think most people would say that 12' is too far for a 60" screen). There should be little to no controversy surrounding the upgrade from 1080p to 4K.
Going from 4K to 8K, that may take a little more convincing.

Refresh rate should be another thing that improves constantly from here on out. As was stated multiple times during the press conference, we're now in the age where "creativity is the only limit", not that I entirely agree with that statement (physics simulation has an astronomically long way to go), but if people actually believe it there should be plenty of power leftover to keep things running at a smooth clip.
60hz is for consoles, 120hz should be the PC standard.

There will be 4K games, but only near the end of the PS4s life and only games without very good visuals. Such as those £0.99 indie games.

I honestly thought that PS4 would have 4k using 1080p Up-scaled to 4k.
It appears I was wrong.

Well duh! It would struggle with 1440p, most likely.

(3840 x 2160) / (1920 x 1080) = 4 or 2^2.

That maths equation is all you need to know and thus why 8GB of shared memory is needed.
4GB dedicated to video RAM (at 4k resolution) and the rest to computer processing. Most games, even on PCs, don't consume more than 4GB RAM. It's amazing how many people can't do basic math and know that you only need 1 GB video RAM to run 1920 x 1080.

The comments in OP article are laughably doh.gif

Because that math is completely flawed. You can run games at 4000k resolution even on a 1GB card as the frame buffer does not take up that much space. In games by far the most vram hungry thing is textures, how much space the frame buffer needs depends on lots of things starting with resolution and AA but also the amount of render passes and post processing.

Even at 5760x1080p and 8xMSAA there aren't really many games that reach 2GB's of varm and to get over it you need to run some high res texture mods and even then you don't go much over 2GB's.
In terms of vram 3GB is enough for 4k assuming the the texture resolution remains the same as now.

The TV will scale the image, from what I've heard upconverted 1080p looks fantastic! At least that's the way they'll sell it without 4k content on the market.
