You could go Quad-SLI Titans and 4k still wouldn't be playable...current hardware just isn't there yet

Wow, you really underestimate hardware. That is a bold claim to say two Titans would not play games at 30FPS locked at 4K.

Yeah there are a few expections, but by and large console gaming is, and always will be, a 30 fps affair.

Depends on the tv, but generally if you are close enough to see the pixels, you're too close to see the whole picture and use it like a tv. I would say for the 32-64 inch tv anything closers than 2-4 feet is far too close to comfortably view the tv.

Amazon has a little guide for this here

Using TV's as monitors is a different thing all together, but it would be pretty stupid to sit 2 feet from a 64" monitor...

They've mentioned the system will be doing 1080p @ 60 fps almost standard. 4K is retarded anyway.

I don't see the point of PS4 or Xbox 720 playing games at 4K. By the time 4K become somewhat affordable PS4/720 will be at least half into their lifetime cycle. Maybe the next one after PS4/Xbox 720 will play at 4K but not now. I'm pretty exited about the new consoles, and can't wait for technology to start producing graphics cards that play 4K smoothly with one GPU.

This is a baseless statement if ever I saw one. Console gaming is already breaking into 60fps with ten year old tech. To say that 60 will never be the norm is absurd.

Baseless in what sense? By absurd you mean no historical or present day evidence, or lacking a good supporting argument? The list of 60 fps games from this generation is dismally small, and outside of mw and a forza contains almost no AAA titles.

This has been true of the last 3 generations of 3d gaming. So the FACTS are on my side.

My argument to support why I think this trend will remain dominant is really quite simple. Rendering games at 30 fps gives you twice graphical fidelity and most console gamers won't notice (I understand you and I WILL notice). A flashier game generally sells better and is clearly easier to market than one that looks worse but runs faster. Also such games get much better word of mouth, think of Gears of War, Mass Effect, Killzone 2, Uncharted 2, Crysis 2, Halo 4 etc...

All these games run at 30 fps, all are, or were, known for having bleeding edge graphics on consoles (not suggesting that's all the were known for, but the were all known for their graphics as well). You can always get significatly better image quality by lowering the frame rate, and because of this nearly all console games will run at 30 fps.

There will be exceptions, but they will be few and far between. Forza, Rage, Cod and a bunch of ps3 launch titles don't speak against my argument at all.

Consoles have maybe two more generations left before they disappear and something new replaces then. I am making the claim now and I will stand by this, the facts and arguments are in my favor; it is absurd to suggest that 60 fps gaming will ever be the norm on consoles. Never going to happen.

Not really sure why everyone cares so much about 4k. I have not seen a 4k display, but I suspect the jump fromm hd to 4k will be nothing at all like the jump from sd to hd was. I doubt you'll be able to notice most of the time, but I could be wrong.

Correct me if I am wrong, but isn't this basically what people are doing with eyefinity displays?
You should check out a rMBP and sMBP running the same game at native resolution. That'll give you an idea of what to expect. It should be amazing.

How does that work exactly?

The hardware is ready... but not for this form factor, and not in this price range. Sure it could run games at 4k, but it'll melt itself and cost you $3000.
