[Joystiq]IGN hit with layoffs; 1UP, Gamespy and UGO shutting down - Page 4

Second time 1up.com has closed down, I will miss them for sure. IGN has become terrible and gamespy was the bane of late 90's early 2000's online shooter fans.

I hope IGN doesn't close as it's my favourite game review site. I didn't expect that GameSpy would shut down as it's quite good as well.

Always hated Gamespy......... I remember back in the day, I thought their client was a virus, it was so bad.

Only thing that sucks though, is that the older game server lobbies will disappear now..... like Stronghold, etc.

Can't say I'm sad. As anyone who played PC games online from '96-04 or so will tell you, Gamespy was the worst kind of filthy scum software around. You think Steam/Origin/etc are bad? You don't even know.

This. I'm honestly shocked there's so many people in this thread that will actually miss Gamespy but to each their own, I suppose. Back when they bought out MPlayer and then closed it down a few weeks later with the promise to integrate identical features from MPlayer into their own client... yeah. Never happened.

As a massive lover of Quake 2 back in the day, they never even bothered allowing you to make your own game lobbies and launch your own multiplayer game sessions like MPlayer allowed. You were forced to use dedicated servers. Ironic considering a lot of people complain of the reverse these days. A lot of games in MPlayer also actually had a competetive ranking sytem that went down with it when Gamespy closed it down. In addition, their website was a nightmare to navigate.

With all that being said, I can't say that I will miss them all that much. In fact, I almost feel like celebrating.

EDIT: and no, I'm not talking about the linux movie player Mplayer tongue.gif
