What tablet for reading pdfs/textbooks?

Thread Starter
Hey guys, looking for a tablet for my pdf needs. I was looking at the ipad and Nexus 10, and I really like android, except the 16:10 aspect ratio is putting me off.

I feel like the ipad 4:3 ratio is better for pdfs.

Should I get an ipad? Or am I wrong and pdfs are fine on the Nexus 10.

Thanks

PDF's are fine for Android. However, even as an Android fanboy, I have to admit that the Ipad supports many more textbooks and if I was buying it for textbooks and pdf's I would probably choose the Ipad.

I'm an android fanboy too. It is why it's so hard for me to maybe admit the ipad might be better......but I might just have too..... I'm just wondering if I'm over thinking this and a nexus is still ok.

The thing is, I don't want to be zooming in every time I turn the page, nor do I want to scroll. I want the entire page to be visible and readable, which on the ipad I know works. I have no nexus 10 to try though, so I'm not sure how the aspect ratio will affect pdfs.

but that means I have to put iTunes on my computer.....

I use a nexus 7 and I dont pinch to zoom on my pdf documents if that helps you at all. I get it to where its comfy to read and then I just scroll away.

Since he mentioned scrolling, I'm thinking he just has the PDF on a fixed zoom.

I personally have no issues reading text (even fine print) with a full page portrait view on the 10.1" Asus Transformer Infinity (1920x1200). The Samsung Nexus 10 should at least be equal if not better. However, I do have very good near vision. Text might be too small for others to read without zooming.

Estimating the physical display dimensions based on aspect ratio:

10.1", 16:10 (1.60)
width: 5.35"
height: 8.56"

iPad 9.7", 4:3 (1.33)
width: 5.82"
height: 7.76"

A4 (1.41)
width: 8.27"
height: 11.69"

Letter (1.29)
width: 8.50"
height: 11.00"

If you try to read an A4-sized PDF in full page portrait on a 10.1" Android, you'd get a 5.35" x 7.56" image (~0.5" black bar each on top and bottom). On a 9.7" iPad, you get 5.49" x 7.76" (~0.2" black bar each on left and right).

If you try to read a letter-sized PDF in full page portrait on a 10.1" Android, you'd get a 5.35" x 6.92" image (~0.8" black bar each on top and bottom). On a 9.7" iPad, you get 5.82" x 7.53" (~0.1" black bar each on top and bottom).

While the number might not seem like much, it actually makes a noticeable difference in terms of comfort. I've actually gone in search of Android tablets with 4:3 2048*1536 displays. There's one already available from Archos (97 Titanium HD, RK3066 dual-core) and another one that was just announced (97 Platinum HD, A31 quad-core). Plenty of off-brand China tablets, too, if you're willing to try your luck. However, from reviews I've read, I'd say retina on Android isn't quite ready for prime time just yet. The low-cost chipsets/CPU/GPU currently used in these devices are just too weak. *sigh* Would sure be nice if they'd put an Exynos 5 on these things. rolleyes.gif

By the way, you don't need iTunes on your computer. Heck, you can use the iPad without a computer at all. Starting with iOS 5, you don't need to connect iOS devices to iTunes in order to activate. As for copying files to the iPad, there are plenty of ways to do that via wi-fi.

Thanks for the awesome post!
That is exactly the info I need to hear.

I found out that the nexus 10 is sold at staples so I'm gonna go over and load a pdf on it, see how it works.

I'll take a look at the Archos too.

If none of the above satisfies me, I guess there is nothing left but too ipad.

If you go the iPad route and don't require very large capacity (128GB) or very high gaming performance, I suggest you consider getting a 3rd gen refurb iPad direct from Apple. Item is like new with new battery and new chassis and you get the same 1-year warranty as with a brand-new item. If you want, I believe you can also get AppleCare+ extended warranty for your refurb iPad. There's quite some significant cost savings to be had if you go refurb.

iPad 3 Wi-Fi refurb
16GB: $379
32GB: $449
64GB: $549

iPad 4 Wi-FI
16GB: $499
32GB: $599
64GB: $699

I'm not seeing them on the Apple site? I just see refurbished Ipad 2s and Ipad 3 with cellular.

Yea space is of no concern for me. I'd access all my pdfs from the cloud anyways.

They go in and out of stock quite often. If you're not in a hurry to buy yours, maybe just check the site every few days or so.
