So, I got my grandmother a Celeron G530

I have to say.... gone are the days of mocking the Celeron line. This thing actually impresses me quite a bit considering how cheap it is. It runs super cool, even under the stock cooler, and it takes quite a bit to really push it. I knew Sandybridge was a pretty huge step forward, but I think the lower end CPU's are where the biggest advancements were made. Nehalem still holds up well with their higher end chips, but the lower end before SB is laughable.

Good job, Intel! I might have to build myself an Ivy Bridge Celeron or Pentium just to play with for a while. They're cheap enough. smile.gif

BTW, this was an upgrade from an Athlon single core 939 chip for her.

Toss a Sandy/Ivy Bridge Celeron on a B75 mATX motherboard with 4GB of RAM and you've got the nucleus of a pretty decent budget box for relatives looking to do basic stuff (Facebook, email, etc.)

Here's an example I put together in like 10 minutes:

Celeron G1610 (Ivy Bridge) = $50
MSI B75MA-P45 (w/ VGA + DVI outputs) = $62
G.Skill F3-10666CL9D-4GBNS (2 x 2GB DDR3-1333) = $27

Total: $139
