I am running a minecraft server right now it performs for my friends and I at what we need but we dont have enough power to expand for more users our max is 5 people

server current specs,
dell Vostro 400
server 2008
foxconn motherboard dg33m03 (it says max 8gb would the bios recognize more then 8gb eg the current macbook pro only says it supports 8gb but my dad is running 16gb)
Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q6600 @ 2.40GHz
2gb ram ddr2
50gb ocz ssd

what i would be replacing it with is
GIGABYTE AMD GA-970A-DS3 AM3+
AMD FX-4130 3.8GHz Quad Core AM3+ Unlocked( i know its amd it was cheaper then any intel that i could find)
Crucial Ballistix 4GB Desktop Memory Module -DDR3

OR

Cooler Master HAF X Full Tower Gaming Case
Corsair 4096MB PC5400 DDR2 667MHz Memory

thank you for all your help

Upping the memory to 8GB is the answer, HOWEVER, new DDR2 memory has become very expensive unless you can find 2 x 4GB DDR2 667 memory somewhere cheap, like eBay.

Servers need as many cores as possible and tons of memory. An, on the cheap server, that could handle up to 16 users might be:

thanks for the parts list

do you think it would be the board and cpu i was looking at would be a good start it will support the oct-core and up to 32gb of ram

http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=7470415&sku=M69-0826 it was a combo so it was much cheaper then buying them separate

If your main concern is adding members to your server then you really won't be any better off with the combo deal you found (only quad core, same as your current CPU, and only 4GB memory). I'd rather see you try to find 2 x 4GB DDR2 667 memory somewhere cheap. That way you will probably be able to support a couple more members.

Might the AMD FX-6100 Zambezi 3.3GHz Socket AM3+ 95W Six-Core ($119) and 2 x 4GB memory be inside your budget?

thats kind of what i was thinking, with the mobo combo it supports all am3 and am3+ cpus so i was thinking start with the quad core which is almost already twice as fast, then down the line i can get the oct core

the hexcore and MSI 970A-G46 board was was cheaper then the bundle and now i have a bit more i can add to ram

thank you very much
