well, i think this thread just made me rethink picking up a 660 strictly for more Vram.

So this makes the 660Ti 3GB a complete fraud? rolleyes.gif
post #14 of 22
Well this doesn't make me too happy about getting a 660Ti! Should have just gone with the 7950....

Turns out I do use more than 1500mb of ram but only on rare instances... I had far cry 3 with max settings aa turned up to 8x and it spiked to 1800mb on afterburner. But after that it remains at around 1500mb. I tried modded skyrim and it maxes out around 1500mb as well..

Can someone do me a favor? If you have a gtx670 2gb or 660ti 3gb. Could you report me your vram usage? Especially with msi afterburner.
I'm almost certain that a modded skyrim will use more than 1500mb, but my card is saying no. I used 2k mod +20 other random things lol

I have Gigabyte 660ti OC'ed and i found the hardcap to be around 1810 mb.

When running skyrim full of mods i would go from 60 fps to 15 fps average just as the memory usage hit 1810 mb.

But im happy with this card, i have the core running 1320mhz stable overall, and the memory i have +600 offset so the speed is over 170 gb/s which helps a little.
I doubt i could have run my kepler that hard if it were a 256bit feeding it with data. It would probably heat up alot more.

But in hindsight, i would also have picked up the 7950, especially seeing the Valley 1.0 bench competition where it delivers around 5-8 more fps average.

Ill think ill just keep this 660ti and then check next holiday what nVidia\AMD has to offer.. But im definitly going to be more aware about memory bus now..

But i learned an important lesson:

1. Never trust any hardware review site, comparing brands and cards and giving off a biased conclusion. You only need to browse www.overclock.net, check the competitions, check the overall user discussions, then you will be much more confident in your choice.

Too bad i registered here after I made a choice tongue.gif

Well if 1810 is the hardcap then I'll settle with that, the most I've heard from other ti users is 1800 also, 200 less than 2gb meh close enough. Kinda like hard drives advertised as 1tb but uses 920gb effectively, guess I won't sweat it.
As long as it wasn't something rediculous like 1300mb which is lowballing it way too much!

Not any more of a fraud than the 4GB versions of the 670/680 which basically show no performance advantage vs their 2GB counterparts as well, at least not in a single card configuration.

None of these GPU cores are really powerful enough to push an image larger than 2GB in size whilst still maintaining a playable framerate ... although the one exception is in games modded to use extra large textures (like you can do with Skryim), which hog up the vram but don't tax that core all that much.

Also @OP, I don't think that the way the 2GB 660ti card works is that the 512MB of vram (1/4 of capacity) that's on the narrower bus is used 'last', after the first 1.5GB is used up. I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure it's effectively 'used' in the same ratio no matter how much vram you're using. So even if your usage is 1000MB, you're using 750 on the wider bus, and 250 on the narrower bus.

Edit:I read the article from Anand, and now I really don't understand HOW they're doing what they're doing. So scratch what I said about 32-bit memory controllers ... dunno where I thought I saw the card had a mix of 32 and 64-bit controllers, I was mistaken there.

However I'd (still) wager that there really is no subsection of the 'memory' that's 'slower' (and 'not used til the end') in the way that you're thinking, and thus, I think your concerns about some kind of 'barrier' that crops up specifically at 1500MB due to the unusual bus configuration ... are likely misplaced.

brettjv, so I just had a buyer's remorse for a minute, till I read your post. Does that mean that the 660 Ti doesn't lose much by not having the full 256-bit?
Is the ideal configuration 64-bit per each 512 MB? Yea I am a noob in this so please bear with me biggrin.gif.

I downloaded a tech demo called a new dawn from nvidia because I heard it was taxing on the vram. Running it at 1080p my vram had a consisten use of over 1600mb, peaked at 1700mb. So it turns out that the "wall" at 1500mb I'm suspecting, just turns out to be that my vram usage wasn't so demanding to warrant going any higher.
I hope that means skyrim with 2k textures and the 20 mods I used is actualy using less than 1500mb smile.gif
