NEWSFLASH: The individual people working on that stuff are people like you and me. They get lazy and take shortcuts. Any damage that Sony takes will be passed on to the employee(s) that caused this, and it's the little guy worker getting hurt, not the corporation.

As an individual employee they represent the company, if anyone gets hit it's Sony. They can get fired but they cannot pass down the punishment for taking artwork, so the will need to get new art and probably pay a penalty (sony).

If I were to "write" an essay in college, and be caught for plagiarism, I'm pretty sure I would immediately fail the class and be dismissed. At a minimum, the maximum is you are dismissed from all your classes, and can't attend that school anymore, oh and all the failing grades. There's no second chance, your old enough to hopefully know stealing others peoples work, and using it as your own is wrong. I would expect a company to know this sort of thing, dealing in the world of copyright.

If they get fined, they'll at the very minimum fire the person responsible, and they can shift the blame to that person as well. Ever heard of being fired for unprofessional conduct? It happens all the time. Could they sue the person for damages incurred? Yes, they can. They have workplace ethics and rules, and violation of those ethics and rules does give Sony the right to shift blame, sue the person, fire the person, etc. When you work at a company, you agree to abide by all of their rules, or face the consequences.

Again, you as an individual know that. But what if it was a joint paper with 5 other people, and one paragraph of a 20 page paper was plagiarized? Are you seriously going to spend the time and effort to make sure your teammates didn't plagiarize their work? No, you will assume that they did their work properly, unless you have reason to suspect the person of taking shortcuts in the first place. There is a huge significant difference between an individual and a team.

I'm sure Sony knows this. I'm sure they don't want to be sued, leave themselves open to litigation, and potentially lose money. But does the person who think it's not going to matter if they copy one tiny picture and pass it off as their own?
