Corsair Hydro H55 vs Similar Priced Air Cooler

Hi,
I have almost finished my Case Mod(here). I am now now looking to start upgrading some components, starting with the cooling. I don't have huge wads of cash like most people I see here tongue.gif.

I am looking at the Corsair Hydro H55, this seems a reasonable CLC deal. I don't have any experience with water cooling, so I think an all in one system would be a gentle step in water cooling for me. What I wanted to know is, will something like the Corsair Hydro H55 perform better then a similar priced CPU Air Cooler such as be quiet! Dark Dark Rock Advanced(link).

Another thing that worries me is that I assume that these CLC will be filled with standard distaled water, which is I believe is non conductive for a while until the water becomes contaminated. Is it possible with open up the all in ones and fill them with something non conductive such mineral oil or other non conductive liquid.

What's limiting the cooling capacity on the H55 (or any other H2O in this capacity) is the size of the radiator. From a cooling point of view you will get much better results going with a high quality aircooler. The Coolermaster Evo, Coolermaster 212+, Xigmatek SD1283 and of course higher priced units such as the Noctua NH-C14 will all outperform the H55 and will probably do so at an only slightly higher noise level. Noise of course is highly dependent on which fan is being used and personal tolerance.

As far as modding any of these AIO's goes, you can certainly do that but keep in mind that it will void the warranty, not to mention potential damage to your hardware if you make a mistake.

The rad. on this H55 is about 120mm. I think it's small because it's only cooling the CPU.

Would a 120mm rad. CLC system cool better than a high end CPU air cooler?

For the same price as the H55 you could get an NZXT Havik 140 air cooler which would perform much better. Of course if you spend $10-$15 more you're into the range of the NH-D14 and top end air coolers which demolish the H55.

Generally speaking, no. If you want better cooling go with a high a quality aircooler or a larger rad.

My Antec 920 cools better than my 212+ by 4c when running overclocked @4.5GHz at 1.272v.

What do you think of this water cooling kit?

http://www.watercoolinguk.co.uk/p/Magicool-DIY-Watercooling-Kit-775-1156-1366-AM2-AM3_11056.html

This looks like it has potential to be upgraded with bigger rads. etc... and it's only £10 more. From you experience, what does this kit look like to you?

I would not buy a £65 water cooling kit, it's a recipe for disaster. If you want to do custom water cooling it's always better to do it properly and not skimp out.

Yeah, that's what I thought would be the case. I think the safest option for me, for now, is to get a high end air cooler. Then, when I have the money, go for custom water cooling. Thanks for your input.

Do you have a budget for the air cooler?
