nvidia gtx 670 ftw overclock

Thread Starter
Hey folks,
as the title says, i wanna clock my card,

At the moment with nothing running, its sitting defaults

Default clock 1006 memory 3104 boost 1084

According to nvidia inspector, its sitting @

Current clock 324Mhz memory 324Mhz Est max 1189

Ok my guess is most people use msi, so i have that and kombuster downloaded.

Any tips?

Heres where im at, im now using heaven and evga precisionX, i have slid my voltage right up and increased my wotsit to 145%
My core clock is 1006, so i have added 135 to that, and i am getting an averege of 90
Heaven settings are dx9, stereo disabled, shaders high, tess normal, ani 4,AA 8,full screen @ 1920X1080(monitors res)

I cant work out the "rev counter" i know my core is 1006 so if i add the 135 to that it gives me1141,

Now where does my graphics card's "BOOST" come into it? because boost would normally take it to 1084, does this mean anything beyond that is technically an overclock?

Next, do i keep running heaven till either it crashes/artifacts or my FPS drop (say to 30FPS)?

Thanks

Paul

I use precision X, I find it's better for the 600 series. I use MSI on my laptops radeon 6000M though.

Best guide in my opinion: http://www.overclock.net/t/1265110/the-gtx-670-overclocking-master-guide

Just be patient, GPU overclocking isn't as intense as CPU overclocking but it still takes time and patience.

HI MME, i have actually just posted an edit, if you could have a read over it.

I had a read of that, and found quite overwhelming - only because im not that savvy when it comes to "the tech words" etc etc, which puts me off a bit, hence why i need someone (like you lol) to hold my hand smile.gif
I am just trying to do the "quick half hour" overclock, as i aint looking for anything spectacular, if i gives me 1 or 2 FPS for FSX then i am happy with that (its just to keep me above the nvidia half RR to keep my FPS above 30

Kind regards

Paul

I have managed to get my 3570k stable @4.8 so its g/card time

I'd recommend leaving the voltage slider alone and maxing the power target. Look at the max voltage reading and you'll probably see it go to the max at some point even with the slider at default. In my experience it only adds voltage unnecessarily, increasing temps.

You'll probably see artifacts before a crash but yeah, keep increasing until that happens. Also, if you see a decrease in score drop the clock back and see if it goes back up. If the score goes down at all, it usually means something isn't right. Also you should testing with everything maxed at your system resolution. Dx11, ultra, extreme, 8x msaa, full screen. If you have multimonitor or 3d enable that, if not leave it off.

And yeah, reading this stuff for the first time is a bit overwhelming tongue.gif
I'm not sure what you mean by rev counter.

But for clocks, each card has a base clock. Think of that just like any other clock. Then there is a boost clock. Think of this similar to Intel's turbo boost. The boost clock a card can achieve it dependant on power draw, temperature, and whether or not it has enough voltage. The maximum clock achieved, which is really all that matters, is the base clock + boost.

When you increase the clock offset in afterburner, you increase the maximum clock.

If you hit the 70 C, the card will reduce clock speed by 13 MHz. It will also do this if you hit the power target or it becomes unstable due to voltage.

Is it starting to make a little sense? thumb.gif

Hey folks,

Heres where im at now :
benchmarks.txt 1k .txt file

Ok, so i am topping out at +100

Which is giving me a base clock of 1280 - my default is 1006 and boost takes me to 1089(i think) so even 1089+ the +100 =1189 so where is the extra 91 coming from? (1280-1189)
I am clearly missing something here, but i dont mind smile.gif - i don't think

Right, now i do the same thing with memory, but do i reset my base clock to zero before i start doing this, or do i leave it as it is?

Also i am having trouble saving my profile @ +100, i put in "A"

REgards

Paul

Kepler cards have a boost offset that won't match up, that is normal smile.gif. As far as memory, it can strain the gpu enough to affect the core overclock, so you should try to push it while the core is oc'd and if it gets unstable or starts to not gain performance, back off a bit. You can also try doing the memory on its own and then you will know the max of each individually to try to find a good balance from there. GDDR5 won't crash unless set to crazy levels, due to the error correction. So make sure you are gaining performance in 100mhz jumps, then back off one once it stops or starts to lose.

Hi golden tiger,
I will have to run it all again, as i downloaded and have been running 2.1 - i am reading posts etc from a laptop while testing my main pc, so i didnt't actually download it using the link.

Thanks

EDIT:, should i be using version 3 or 4? or does it not matter?

It was so i could compare to others and get comparisings form others.

Do you mean for Heaven? If so, just use a version you can compare a lot of results with, as scores change from version to version on that. You'll probably find the most results with 3.5 from back towards the GTX 670 launch. However, newer driver versions will have improved the score you'll get, so keep that in mind when comparing. If you can find more recent results with the newest version that's always best for comparison.

Hey guys,

Ok here is where i am at now benchmarks.txt 3k .txt file :

I am a bit confused over how some of the clocks have come about - ie when i am raising the memory clcok, - say by 150 it doesnt add 150 to the clock (3206 +150 = 3251???)
Each result os copied from the results screen

Fair enough tho, - is it a case of i clock my core, - reset then clock my memory, find out max stable on both - then combine the 2? i tried that and got a couple of shutdowns, so i reverted back a couple of clocks

so according to this, ive went from 45.7FPS to 51.2 5.5FPS, thats like nearly 15% frame rate increase, or am i reading this wrong?

Some more help would be amazing ??

Regards

Paul

EDIT:
Ok i have just ran my application -(FSX) and my memory clock is running at the overclocked 3524, but my core has remained @ 1084 (which i think is what the "boost" is)

Any ideas? thats precisionX(down the bottom, where i have got my gpu clock from in my test results) AND nvidia inspector telling me that.

This was not a 3HR jb, let me tell you that - i have been at it for nearly 10!! - yes ALL DAY! lmao
