Crash when VRAM is full

I tried searching but did not find if people are having problems when hitting VRAM limits.

Running 1440p with 7970/7950 crossfire.

When playing BF3 or Skyrim (lots of mods) with no AA but everything Ultra - average ~2.6GB of VRAM usage. Once I turn on AA, jumps to 3GB and within 10 seconds game crashes or PC BSOD. Game runs fine if less than 3GB used.

My friend, you have found yourself the bane to any Modder's existence mad.gif

On a serious note: is there something you are asking of us? As in is this normal? Well yes, I crashed a bazillion and two times with my skyrim heavily nodded, that's why I sold my gpu and saved up for a 4gb model. Are there ways to avoid this? Well... skyrim has a texture optimization tool which could help reduce the gram usage a bit, something like smco I think is the abbreviation. Why does AA cause this? Well, I don't know the exact answer, but it does increase gram usage - this is not an anomaly you are experiencing.

I'm not sure if BF3 is supposed to use a ton of vram, I haven't played it on the computer yet, but I can say that yes you are crashing from too many textures trying to load into vram and yes there are a few ways to try and reduce your vram footprint, but in the end there's only so much that can be done.

I don't know if that helped or just reiterated what you already know, if you have a specific question please ask away so we can help you better wink.gif

Skyrim aside... it stinks I can not run AA with BF3. Even with 0xAA I' have seen it as high as 2.8GB used!

I thought if VRAM was maxed out then FPS would suffer, but not resulting in the game/pc to crash. rolleyes.gif

Edit:

There must be something wrong because there are numerous GPU reviews on the web that benchmark 1440p/1600p BF3 with maximum video quality on 7970s and no mention of VRAM problems.

I've noticed the VRAM maxing with several of the 13.2 beta drivers.
